That's pretty interesting Goodnight, I'd not heard that before, thanks for sharing Jeri, I've never heard if "shut the front door" before? Though I can remember a character in something I like saying it, I don't know what it means though, most probably because I am from England. Awesome, it's interesting to think about. I guess just sonebody starts using a word in a very derogatory way, it catches on, then becomes and offensive word. I don't know. I've never seen any explanation for why, or how, words become expletives. Though Bucky, that thing about sexual violence against women is pretty interesting. Also, Awesome, about taking the Lord's name in vain, I agree, it is wrong to do so. I think, even if you don't believe that there's any real significance in saying it, you should avoid it, because you're liable to offend somebody. But, unless I'm wrong, I think it's true to say that you could be executed for doing so in around the medieval times! Which is far, far worse than the act of saying it! It's also interesting to bear in mind that, swearing is actually good for you when you are suffering. If somebody is in pain and shouts out a rude word, their brain releases a chemical which makes them feel a little better. But, anyway, we seem to have gone off on a bit of a tangent. I'll try and bring the subject back to The Waltons. When I first saw The Homecoming (at which point I was part way through Season 6 and had seen every episode up to that point) I was quite shocked when Elizabeth said "piss-ant" it seemed a lot ruder than anything that'd gone before! Not that I am personally offended by swearing, though I do choose not to do it. In general The Homecoming seemed gritier, as if, perhaps, it was more adult oriented. I wonder how the show would have been had it gone for nine seasons like that? And I wonder if, after a couple of seasons, it would have mellowed and become more like the show we're all familiar with?

For AR15 and others who may not realize it..... Shut the Front Door is a euphemism for "shut the f*** up" ..... I find it more offensive than, say, "shoot" for "sh*t" , as an example.
Thanks, Tonyray -- I can live without Oreo Fudge Creme -- the question is should I also not purchase regular Oreos. Woe.

I was shocked too when I heard her say that..If I had said "piss-ant", my mother woulda smacked me into the middle of next week...I still remember when I got admonished just for saying the word "heck" when I was a kid...

I had never thought of pissant os a "bad" word .... had no problem with Elizabeth using it .... so, looked it up to be sure: "Pissant is an epithet for an inconsequential, irrelevant, or worthless person, especially one who is irritating or contemptible out of proportion to his or her significance. A Virginia politician who also popularized the term once silenced a heckler by saying "I'm a big dog on a big hunt and I don't have time for a piss-ant on a melon stalk." [note the reference to Virginia !!] I have always thought of it as as nicer way of saying jerk or the equivalent......

I was raised & still believe that you don't say/use the words p*ssant, p*ss, h*ck, d*rn, OMG, use the word goodness when someone sneezes, (we say bless you instead), f*rt (we say pass gas), of course none of the stronger words! Absolutely no using the Lord's name in vain. We say pee & poop or #1 & #2.. We only use Holy & Hell when we are talking about the Bible. So no....Holy smoke, Holy Moly, the H*ll you say, H*ll no, etc.....
I don't expect anyone to start walking on eggshells when they are around me. These are parts of my convictions, beliefs & who I am but I don't try to cram them down anyone's throat. If I hear or read a cuss word, etc...then I just "ignore" it or substitute it in my own head. Example: What in the h*ll are you doing? I have trained myself to hear or read, What in the world are you doing? This is the way both my husband & I were raised & we have tried our absolute best to raise our children the same way. But our job is harder than our folks was because we really didn't start hearing cuss words until we were middle school age. Now you have to be so careful with movies, tv, magazines, etc....not to mention that our kids start kindergarten & get exposed to other little kids cussing.
I have personally witnessed many kids that have just started talking to 5 years of age saying a "bad" word or "shooting a bird" & their parent/or parents laughing about it, thinking it is soooo cute!! Not to me. I did not post this to offend anyone nor do I want anyone thinking that I am looking down on you if you do any of this. We each have our own lives to live & we each have the freedoms to live it the way we choose (but legally of course!)

I have never understood why we have decided to give certain words more power than others.
Most of the time someone uses as cuss word the situation has nothing to do with sexual relations or excrement, or a place from the Bible.
They are just words. People should stop giving them so much power.

People should stop giving them so much power. I suspect the origin of certain words having a "dirty" connotation is probably based in various religions, don't you? So many things have happened because of religious beliefs..... the biggest being WAR ! I think/hope most people worry more about war than words !!
