How did you know where I live? LOLOL!!! I remember a lady I used to work with told me about how she got an orange for Christmas when she was a kid, and I was FLOORED....She said it was indeed a big deal because nobody could afford them during the year...I myself miss the Sterling Linder tree that was HUGE!! And whenever I watch "A Christmas Story" (I remember when it was filmed here), I start to miss the old Higbee's store (it's now a casino) as well as the Halle store where we went to see Mr. Jingeling...
Don't EVEN get me started....Thanks for bringing back such fond memories!

My maternal Grandmother was born in 1923. She always told me that at Christmas if she & her 3 sisters were "lucky"........then they got a peppermint stick or a few pieces of hard candy. They would make them last knowing that it would be another year before they might get some more. They also knew to leave each others' candy alone.
She also said that if you were "blessed"......then you got an orange!!
My paternal Grandmother was born in 1903. Her mother died in 1907, so she & her sister (she was born in 1901) were sent to live with their maternal Aunt. She never recalled getting anything for Christmas growing up.....that it was just another day!
When she graduated High School they did not have the $10.00 (ten dollars) that the 10K gold high school ring would cost. The day the rings came in at school......she received one! She told them that they had made a mistake that she had not ordered one because she did not have the money. She then found out that a male classmate had bought it for her. She was thrilled, cried & of course thanked him over & over again.
She was still touched by his kindness all those years later as she cried everytime she told me the story. I never knew her not to be wearing that ring except whenever she was in the hospital. Every picture taken of her where you can see her right hand, she has the ring on. When she died, it was passed to me, her only granddaughter. I truly cherish it.
Her first job was making dresses in a dress factory. She was paid 10 cents (one dime) for every dress that she made!!!
grtgzu....It is my tradition to watch "A Christmas Story" every year. It first came out in theaters in 1983. My husband & I were dating then & we went & saw it. I absolutely LOVED it! But unfortunately, it did not do well at the box office. I am go glad that over time people have found out what a true gem of a classic this movie is. I would love to make it to Ohio someday to see the "house" & museum.

Hey Forever - it was a mad house downtown when they were filming it, LOL!! Some of us "locals" just stayed away from downtown while it was going on - and ya, it did POORLY at the box office, but I'm glad it became a "cult classic" - As such, I have triple-dog-dared Mr. GrtGzu to change the channel when I have TBS running ALL DAY LONG on Christmas Day...
Good thing there's more than 1 TV set in our house don't cha know......
I'm a child of the 60's, so I never had any Christmas stockings....Just had some really cool toys....I still have fond memories of my blue Easy-Bake Oven.....(and the burns I got from fooling around with those insipid tin pans to bake in, LOL)....And the lovely SILVER fake tree, and the beloved COLOR WHEEL to make it turn colors....I used to stare in amazement at it, and can still smell the tinsel and the GLASS ornaments that adorned it....
Ahhhhh!! - they just don't make Christmas like that anymore....Shame.....
But yeah - if you get the chance to come to town, make SURE you go and see the house and the museum where they filmed part of the movie - it caught fire I heard awhile ago, but there wasn't much damage that couldn't be fixed...They also put on a play at the local theatre as well, but it's just not as good as the movie I don't think....
I may just buy Mr. GrtGzu a leg lamp this year, LOL!!! He'd like that....hee-heee!!

when I watch the Christmas story the father reminds me of my father. Right down to the cloud of obscenities. My mother watched it for the first time and she even said he remids me of your father.

Back in 2007 I went to a Christmas party at the home of a family of Italian ancestry who came to Dallas in the 1970's from Rochester. I got to watch the Chirstmas Story with them and they considered it very hilarious. Since they were born in 1936, they remembered similar incidents that were described in the movie--Be sure to Drink your Ovaltine---Little Orphan Annie---Reading Silas Marner in class---getting one's tongue caught in the frozen telephone pole....

I don't remember if we had stockings, but we always spent Christmas Eve at my paternal grandparents and after all six of us Hawkins young'ins opened our gifts Papaw always had each of us a little brown bag with an orange and nuts and some of that pretty ribbon candy. I can see him now sitting in his chair with his dark brown wool sweater on, and the smell of Futurity Chewing Tobacco. Papaw would be whistling lightly as as he reached behind his back to retrieve those little bags of Christmas cheer.
