I've been thinking about this since watching "The Bicycle" a few weeks ago.....
In my area at least, you seldom see a kid on a bike. I almost said never..... Do parents really have to fear child abduction to this extent? [That's a real question -- I just don't know.....]
Or, don't kids go anywhere anymore, just stay inside at their pc's? Do parents have to drive them everywhere ??
The only time I see bicycles is when some biking "club" is out on the weekend on a specific route (annoying all the drivers who have to manage to get around 20-40 bikers !!!)
What is it like in your area??

When I read the title I thought this was going to be about why non of the Walton kids had a bike.
I don't about why you don't see kids on Bikes anymore I guess it's like you said they just play on their computers all day.
I remember when I was a kid we went all over the place on bikes.

My nieces ride their bikes along their long drive way. I think, sometimes they will ride their bikes on the sidewalk with their friends. I have seen neighborhood kids riding their bikes. If, I could. I will ride a bike. But, I can't. Since, I had a hip fusion in 2003. My hip bone is fused to my back bone. My right hip, can't lift as high, as my left hip. Yes, I do miss riding bikes.

Heh, heh..... I have often thought of asking why the Walton kids never rode bikes and almost mentioned it on my intro to the thread -- but wanted to keep it more about TODAY !! However, that was odd, wasn't it ?? So, now we have two thoughts for the members to address.....

There's always kids on bikes in my neighborhood....Few seem to adhere to the "helmet law" though....In fact, I have 2 bikes in my garage - I'm waiting for Mr. GrtGzu to put some new inner tubes on them, so I can start riding them next spring (I need the exercise for my heart condition, plus I need to drop about 10 more lbs)...
Somebody on another board I saw also brought up the question about what happened to the bike the Waltons had...I'm guessing they scrapped it or gave it away...Didn't some of Elizabeth's little boy friends have one? Or maybe they gave it to Stevie after he got adopted by Curtis and his new wife...

What is it like in your area?? Here in England, I see younger people on bikes all the time! I never learned how to ride one myself though (friends gave me a couple of 'lessons' once, I learned to very basic skills needed) but I've always prefered walking (I go on a five to ten mile walk every single day!). Perhaps I'm biased due to my area, but young people staying in on computers seems to be a stereotype of the media. Somebody else mentioned that none of the Walton kids had a bike, that's true, but I thinl G. W. had one...

I guess it depends on where you live. Kids are always on bikes where I live now, but when we lived in the southeast we never saw kids on bikes.

Not too many kids ride their bikes around here anymore. Lot's of kids have four wheelers now days.
I would love to have one of those vintage beach cruisers to ride, especially this time of year.

Jeri..I grew up in southwest Virginia and my parents never worried about me on a 25 dollar bike from my mom's boss when I turned 10. I now live in Tampa and young kids are driving them everywhere and scares me to death. Child predators everywhere..

I now live in Tampa and young kids are driving them everywhere and scares me to death. Child predators everywhere.. Hmmm..... my younger sister lives in Tampa..... don't think I've ever asked her about kids on bikes in her area. How could I have missed that ?? -- this has been on my mind for quite a while.... But I HAVE spoken with friends in Upstate NY, Connecticut, Ohio, Missouri, California, and Arizona. They have seen bike-riding by kids diminish dramatically. We mostly think it's because of computers, but media coverage of child predators has contributed, too..... What a shame. I loved my bike. I lived on it. Practically slept with it !!! Oh, just remembered, my first summer stock job was before I had a driver's license and I would ride back and forth once a week the 25 miles ONE-WAY out to the theatre from my parents' home -- and so did a couple of the other intern associates. Hard to imagine a kid nowadays doing that !!!

There are plenty of kids who ride bikes in my neighborhood. Not as many walk to school as they did 30 or 40 years ago. Many ride in their parents cars to school.
