I remember Wmfan's review of Season 3 from a few months ago, and I seem to recall that he'd said that he considered it the worst of the early seasons (and several agreed). After just watching it again, I think I can see why people might think this: The season seems rather experimental, there are lots of episodes where the main focus of the story (such as The System) is John-Boy at university. But, most importantly, a lot of the recurring characters of Season 1 and Season 2 are barely in it. The Baldwin sisters are in only two episodes! Ep doesn't appear at all. I don't think Yancy does either (I may be wrong on this on though). The only constant (outside of the family) is Ike, and he's often not seen for episodes at a time. Plus this is a season which introduces characters who would later play a big role: Daisy, Corabeth, Mike, but here you only get there first appearances and they aren't quite fully developed. So I think this is why Season 3 could be called the worst of the early seasons.

In the third season we get to see Nancy Madden one more time---her first appearance was in The Star. Yancy Tucker appears in The Shivaree, We get to meet Olivia's namesake in the same episode. It will not be until the following fall that we see the Baldwins in one of their most poignant appearnces The Boondoggle with Porter Simms. Also Olivia's namesake will return one more time in Seasn 4 to appear in The Loss---also in The Shivaree Olivia asks for help from the sheriff but Sheriff Bridges does not appear.

Ah yes, I had a feeling that Yancy was in it, but I couldn't think of which episode. so I assumed I was wrong. Yeah, there are quite a few times Ep is mentioned, but he's never actually seen. And, I'd just like to make it clear, that I do like Season 3! I'd just noticed that the main recurring characters played much smaller parts this season, and that that's the reason others may have disliked it.

Season Three has some fantastic episodes on offer; The Runaway, The Departure, The Lie, The Matchmakers, The Caretakers, The Statue, to name quite a few.
For me this season deals with stretching my perception of the characters I have known up until now. A couple of those episodes are endearing, and yet almost uncomfortable, for they threaten the closeness built up in my mind.
In truth I enjoy Two and Four a little more, but Three is still beautifully crafted.

I have Season Two Four and 5 on DVD along with the Reunion Episodes. I'd like to get Season 1 if I dont get the whole set. And I've taped a lot of my favorite episodes on tv sorry if that's an infringement lol. As for Season 3 I like it but I like 1, 2, 4 and 5 even better maybe even 6 Grandpa's last season. Sason 3 has great episodes and John Boy goes to college but we are left to figure the rest of the way when does he graduate from Boatwright University. We never see that graduation and I think that should be a key moment heading out into his career and life. Otherwise we just remember him as a newspaper man and writer. Lets see how he finished his education sometime and we never did. Oh well we still watched the show. And I didn't ever mean Season 3 was weaker.I just tried to clarify it to the other seasons around it. You all will make your own opinions of course. Take care talk soon and thanks for the post AR!5 and all the great comments. Waltonsportwriter

Waltonsportwriter Thanks for your input ;D regarding never seeing his graduation, a possibility is that John-Boy had merely made the decision to move to New York at the end of The Achievement, and actually stayed on the Mountain a few months after that episode, going on with life as usual and finishing college. I know we still don't see it, but it's the best idea I can think up!
