I never really thought of it b4, but he must have been a trip. A judge who makes a lot of money bootlegging whiskey.

I wonder if he made a lot of money with the Recipe.... Or, where his money really came from originally. Judges are notoriously underpaid and, in the early days, were mostly "volunteers." The house certainly looks like family money going back a ways.....

I like to think of The Judge as a free sprit who loved life, His daughters and of course The recipe!! Too bad we didn't get to know him.

Maybe he married into money. We know nothing about Mrs Baldwin, Mamie and Emily's mother. They never mentioned her that I can recall. They only ever talked about "Papa"

It was implied that he ran a brothel, too, Well, at least that is what I thought.

Are you talking about him visiting his lady "cousins" at the Whitley house? And I believe Mama Baldwin was mentioned in "The Statue". She didn't like it either and would not let it be put on display on their property.

Probably because Mama Baldwin knew about Mozelle Lewis as well. LOL

And wasn't it found out that at one time he harbored Yankee soldiers during the Civil War? Sister Mamie was "wounded to her very core" when this was found out...
