The fact that Olivia gets so upset about John's decision to work away from home for a while makes her later decision to work at the hospital (even after John-Boy has recovered and returned home) rather hypocritical!

I always assumed it was just another way to try and explain Olivias absence from the show. Maybe the writers failed to remember her attitude towards John when he went away.

I might be completely wrong here, and please correct me if I am. But I thought after John Boy returned she stayed there because she was poorly? Or is that another time?

I might be completely wrong here, and please correct me if I am. But I thought after John Boy returned she stayed there because she was poorly? Or is that another time? No, no, you are partially right ;D in The Waiting Olivia decides to work at the hospital to be with John-Boy until he recovers, and then in The Move, she becomes ill again and cannot return to the mountain (John moves away from it also, so he can be with her). But in The Furlough John-Boy returns to the mountain, having recovered from his war wounds, this is before The Move, and Olivia does not come back with him. Then you have The Medal and The Valediction, both of which are after John-Boy's recovery, but Olivia is still absent, implying that she still works at the hospital. Then A Decade of The Waltons comes along and Olivia is seemingly living with them once again, as is Esther (who had left them sometime between the end of Season 7 and the start of Season 8), but then in The Outrage Olivia is gone again (and so is Esther) and is presumably working at the hospital again. The Outrage is episode 1 of Season 9 and The Move is episode 7, and in The Move she is definitely still working at the hospital, this is also when she becomes ill. So presumably, after John-Boy recovered she continued working there, then got an extended period of time off and lived with the family again, but then had to go back, stayed there for a while, became ill and then had to go back to the sanitorium in Arizona... As you can see, in Season 8 and Season 9 the timeline was already confusing! But it is clear that Olivia spent quite a while working away from home at the hospital after John-Boy was better.

Gosh that is confusing :s I wish she didn't leave though it wasn't right without her I agree! Especially with Esther gone too, I feel the show needed a 'responsible' adult figure along with the children, and Olivia and Esther being gone left that hole unfilled. I remember watching an episode shortly after The Parting and thinking "Hmm, Olivia hasn't done much in today's episode... Oh wait..." but, having said that, I still really like Season 8 and Season 9, just like I love all of The Waltons ;D I just missed the characters.

Not to suggest that John was not responsible, of course! But he was a lot more lenient. I missed the disputes between him and Olivia about what they felt the kids could and couldn't do.
