I wish they could show The Homecoming but they said they couldn't get the rights to it.

As I said so many things I saw and heard from the Walton's series. Now I hope they show the Homecoming on tv sometime.Neat to watch Spencer's Mountain Clayboy? Cousin to John Boy Actually, Earl Hamner's book, Spencer's Montain, does take place in Virginia during the Great Depression, and the characters are based on Hamner's family, just as they are in The Homecoming. (The family in the book The Homecoming is named Spencer). The names of the characters in the movie The Homecoming were changed to satisfy legal concerns with Warner Bros, who owned the rights to Spencer's Mountain. So, the family in Spencer's Mountain is actually the Walton family. I remember watching the movie Spencer's Mountain once when it was on TV sometime back in the 1960s, and thinking what a really good movie it was, but not giving it much thought otherwise. Then sometime in the 1970s, after I had been watching The Waltons for several seasons, I saw Spencer's Mountain again and noticed that it was based on a book written by Earl Hamner, Jr. So I was thinking, Earl Hamner, Jr? Isn't that the man who wrote The Waltons? That's when I finally put it together that it was the same family. Brenda

Wasn't it Spencer's Mountain that Earl Hamner was not happy with the script? I could be wrong, but I remember reading that somewhere.

I think it's hilarious that in Spencer's Mountain they say "kissing & hugging" is "making love." I own a dvd of "The Homecoming," so I can watch it whenever I want. When I was a kid growing up they always showed that movie in December. They also always showed the claymation (like Rudolph) movie, "Peter Cottontail" around Easter. Sadly, they don't show The Homecoming or Peter Cottontail anymore. (I own Peter Cottontail on dvd also). I keep expecting them to quit airing "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "The Grinch." It makes me wonder if they quit showing The Homecoming because it has the missionary woman asking for bible verses in order to get a gift & then the church scenes with Reverend Hawthorne Dooley. Then of course, I wonder if they quit showing Peter Cottontail because Easter is associated with Jesus. Even though the movie doesn't mention Jesus but Easter brings the Easter Bunny.....so I wonder?!?!? Rudolph & the Grinch has nothing at all about the bible, Jesus, etc....so I think that's why they still air them. Personally, I wish they still aired all of them so the next generation of young kids can enjoy them. Parents that don't want their kids to watch it can always change the channel but I guess the networks are afraid of possibly losing the almighty dollar...they love chasing it so. That's another thing I don't understand. Since they love chasing the dollar so much, why doesn't someone step up & film "The Waltons' 40th Anniversary Celebration" on Saturday 9/29/12?? I really believe the dvd would sell lots of copies. They could always film it & sell it MOD (manufacture on demand). Warner Brothers sells lots of movies & series that way. They don't make the dvd until you pay for it.

Yes, that scene is in Spencer's Mountain. The preacher was played by Wally Cox, who was "Mr. Peepers" in an early 1950s sitcom. INSP bleeped out all the profanity in the movie, which is fine with me, but it would have been cute to hear little Pattie-Cake (played by Kym Karath, who went on the play Gretl in The Sound of Music) declare that she wants to go to Hell with Matt.

I like the Waltons TV characters best. No offense to Spencers Mountain. It was a good movie but like the Movie MASH even the Homecoming had different parents and grandparents when we watch it now we're more familiar with the tv characters and series. My opinion. wmsportwriter
