I've noticed that Grandpa often reminds the family that Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy are due on the radio.
You do remember that Edgar Bergen had the Grandpa role in the pilot film, before it went to Will Geer, right?
I wonder how those scenes would have played had Bergen still been playing Grandpa Zeb? In extremely ironic fashion, I'd say. Probably, the writer would have chosen a different show to reference.
I don't recall that Bergen had particularly strong credentials as a dramatic actor (some old-timers can set me straight on that matter -- I may be the dummy here), so I imagine that the character would have been played more for comedy had he been retained.
I'm happy that they made the switch, but the alternative is interesting to contemplate.

Most ppl didn't even recognize him unless he was with Charlie McCarthy. Bit of trivia: Edgar Bergman play Mr. Thorkelson in the movies "I Remember Mama" the man in love with "Trina", who was played by Ellen Corby.

I read somewhere on another site that the reason Will Geer mentioned it was to give a "nod" to EG for his part in the original movie....
