None of the Waltons cast will come close in their lifetimes..... Her appearances on the show were her last work, I think. Much as we all enjoyed Merie Earle (Maude), she can't hold a candle to Bondi-- doesn't have the chops -- but, then, she didn't start her acting career until she was 67 !!! BTW, just hit the "quote" button before you "reply" in order to reference a posting.....

I agree John Boy who is really Earl Hamner on screen made the show, he was the oldest child and while everything isn't about him, he does deserve what he does contribute to the show especially Richard Thomas. Put it this way without him there would be no Waltons! Best wishes waltonsportwriter.

Jeri - "turned off" by Richard? Inconceivable! ;D
John-Boy had the unenviable position of being the oldest in a big bunch of kiddos. He had to take care of the younger ones, much like a third parent, which is an unfair responsibility to be put on him. So if he wants to call the others "the children", he can go right ahead in my opinion. He may have been favored in some ways, but he also had tons more responsibilities than the other kids ever did. It's amazing that he didn't whine more.

Oh, man, I would hate it if some people were getting confused about who was posting what. I'm totally with you !

The Conflict has always been a favorite episode of mine....love Beulah Bondi in it and it gives us a peek at real history when they did really move people off of the land to build the Blue Ridge Hwy.
Mostly I love John-Boy in the series but at times yes he could be a bit too self-righteous but the show was built around his character.
My neighbors growing up had 8 children...I remember the couple oldest ones always seemed mean to me (my girlfriend was a middle child in the family ). The older kids always had to watch the younger ones and had lots of chores to do because their dad worked day shift and their mom worked evenings. I think they resented it so I can understand a bit of John-Boy's frustrations.
