These are the two seasons which seem to be the most popular, so I was wondering which of the two is the preferred amongst you! These are the two seasons which have pretty much everything intact before any changes effected the family. I do think that Season 1 has quite a different feel to every other season, from Season 2 onward they all of that same 'Waltons' feel, which only seems to change slightly for me. So while Season 1 is a unique season, I think it took until Season 2 until it finally filled The Waltons mould... So which do you prefer?

I agree that Season One feels different from the rest. From the titles to the music, the camera angles to the sound, it's all raw and unpolished.
Season Two comes in with different titles, tweaked music and for me a tighter feel, built upon those early episodes that set the tone. As a consequence I prefer Season Two for the effect it has upon me as a viewer. And no guilt for me in saying it is my favourite season of all.

Of course they look and act generally the same, but they'll occasionally say or do something which seems a little strange for them.

Yep, I know what you mean, AR15.
As with most shows that run for many years the initial run is not perfect, but from the off you just know it will be one to stick with.
I like the way Mary Ellen gets to hold her own against the boys in the house, and yet she has roles to savour in The Dust Bowl Cousins, The Minstrel, and The Awakening. These are early forays into her character, half-formed, but great performances all the same.

Season 2 for me. In season 1 they have a different accent especially Jason. I have mentioned this before. It just kinda bothered me. Seemed very unnatural. But some great episodes came from the first season.

The actors are more "polished", stronger and confident.

Season 1 and 2 were both great and led into Seasons 3,4 and 5. I would go with Season 1 slighthly. The opening credits with the real actors/not sketches were classic and the stories were new. Season 2 refined Season 1 and so on. Season 3 was a little weak with John Boy going to college. Strong seasons 4 and 5 came back before the twilight years and after Richard Thomas and Will Geer years mostly in Seasons 6-9. It was left to the children and supporting characters at the end befor the 6 reunion movies rebounded a bit. Whoever goes to the reunion will have to ask what the Waltons future plans are. Maybe they have 1 or 2 specials left. It would be fun waltonsportwriter

I really like the beginning seasons 1972-1978 After Will Geer died and Ellen Corby left things just didn't seem the same. Don't like when Livvy left, or when the cousins moved in. Forget the women's name with the 2 kids, Jeffery was the little boy. Seemed like the beginning of the end!

My grandparents grew up in rural Virginia during the Depression. From their stories..seasons one and two were more realistic as far as their money concerns, the kids going barefoot, looking a little slight. As the show progressed, you really did not see quote the real depression, although I personally do not like either season 1 or 2.

I like Season 2 a little better than Season 1, but season 1 is great.
If you look at other shows that last at least 5 years, Season 2 is usually the best. The writers and actors know what works. Everybody is "hungry" so to speak, and they arent bored.
You can tell that Richard was bored in season 5. Not by his performances, but there are episodes where he is only in a couple of scenes.
edit-yeah, they Actually, looked like they had it kinda tough financially in the 1st couple of seasons. Like I have said before,They looked like they had it the worst in "the homecoming" though.
Believe it or not, A lot of people love "The homecoming" but dont like the series.
