While watching the episode today where she is drinking, something occured to me. Now I don't know for sure what the symptoms are, but the way the role was played seemed perhaps like manic depressive. Please tell me if I am wrong. I don't know anyone who suffers from that disorder. I do know a couple of people who are alchoholics and it is different for everyone.

I think it was depression that led her to drinking......Just my opinion. She certainly recovered quickly. I always found that rather odd.

She may have technically been an alcholic -- but she had never done much drinking, so it hadn't "taken hold" of her to any major degree..... There are many people who might be alcholics if they ever once got started, like my mother in law !!!

Papa John talked about how he had a drinking problem when he was in the war, but we still see him having a beer at the Dew Drop and occasionally sippin' on the recipie..they ALL had some when Ben was gonna be a father...Did the rest of the family never know about it?

"Having a problem" with drinking does not necessarily mean the person is an alcholic..... it can simply be a bad habit for a while which, if the person stops the behavior, can cease to be a problem once certain situational things change..... Liv and his folks may have had an idea about John's drinking during the war but they had probably also realized that he didn't have a serious problem later on.....

It seemed like John was not as bad as Zeb to take a nip from time to time. Grandpa had a bottle hid in his chest of drawers. But it seemed to me that John only occasionaly drank in social settings.

There was the time when Liv had to go get him from the Dew Drop cuz he was mad about something I can't remember - so he had a brew or 2, and then there was the time he and JB got into a bar-fight with some other guys when he was staying at the boarding house and that guy was jealous of him...But ya, he was pretty tame compared to The Old Man who did it whenever Esther wasn't lookin', LOLOLOL!!

I don't think manic depressive (bipolar) was well discussed back in the 70's and alcohol abuse was making the rounds. MADD was started in 1980 so it was very popular.

The posting I made in the Ike 'column' actually should have gone here because it was about Ronnie Claire Edwards(Corabeth)

How come Corabeth never really made friends with the women from Walton's Mtn anyhow? She ran a tea house, beauty salon, boutique, and a real estate agency, yet she never had any friends to confide in...

There were times when she confided in Liv and Esther...... but the scripts didn't lend themselves to much of that ..... even Liv and Esther didn't really have any "friends" -- nor did any of the kids, except for maybe GW and also Aimee..... I guess you could say Ike was John's friend, and most if not all of the neighbors were quite friendly to all of the Waltons .....

That is totally exciting about Ronnie Claire doing a book! She has always been my favorite. As far as Cora Beth drinking..John boy stated at the end of the episode she battled with it for the rest of her life but overcame each time.
