Which member of the family do you think had the worst luck? Who had the most bad things happen to them? I can't really decide myself but they all had their fair share. John-Boy: brain surgery right before his college entrance exam, first draft of his novel destroyed in a fire, motorbike accident, his fiance left him right before the weddning, becoming MIA and losing a close friend in war. Elizabeth: Having every single pet she ever had die after a few days, attracting a poltergeist, her favourite teacher died, having those logs break her legs, being held hostage. Olivia: Polio, teberculosis and then her stint in the sanitorium.
Who do you think had the worst time?

I agree - the whole family seemed to always have a rough time of it. Sometimes it seems like they just can't win for losing!
John-Boy had all the trials you listed plus a few more. Imagine, he goes to see The Hindenburg land and it crashes! Ugh!
Erin had rotten luck in the romance department.
Elizabeth had pretty rotten luck all the way around.
Ben getting captured as a POW was not cool.
I think the worst occurrence was Mary Ellen losing Curt at Pearl Harbor. It was terrible when Grandpa passed away (VERY terrible!) but he and Esther had gotten to have many years together. Curt and Mary Ellen were just starting out.

Well, I think no one, in the history of television had it as bad as Mary Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie. With that being said, I would say from the Waltons, I think Olivia had it pretty bad, for the reasons you gave. She also had bad luck when she permed her hair, got lost with Jim Bob and Elizabeth, and she took it really hard when the children had to be split up in the Burn Out.

Don't forget that Olivia had polio also. Then to catch TB years later, that's bad.

I agree that Olivia was a good contender, and that Mary Ellen losing Curt was probably the worst thing to happen to any of them (okay, so, he was secretly alive, but she did still suffer the pain of losing her husband after about a year and then grieving for several years). I think John may have had the least bad things happen to him (struck by lightning, separated from his wife for a while... Anything else?).

I'd say John-Boy was the most unlucky because he had the most bad things happen to him (after all, he was the star for the first five seasons and most storylines were about him in some way).
I think Jim-Bob was probably the least unlucky because most things that happened to him were not as serious as those that happened to other members of the family. I don't think he ever got seriously ill, or had a loved-one die.

Remember Jimbob lost his appendix the first season and it would have been worse if AJ Covington hadn't been there.

Each and everyone of them ran a course of bad luck , but they trudged thru it.
The worst thing that happened was to Livvy with Polio, tuberculosis , and time spent in the sanitorium. Tb also known as Consumption was a horrible way to live & Die. John "Doc" Holiday Died of TB/Consumption and he died in a colorado sanitorium. A disease infested atmosphere. That's why Doc Holiday went out west to arizona , for the heat , as John W. took Livvy there.

After reading all of these posts, I have to say the Waltons were very unlucky! I never thought about it before until this post, but they needed some four leaf clovers. They sure went through it all didn't they.

TB/Consumption was the Worst thing you can get because you cough up blood and your lung's fill with fluid. As I said John "Doc" Holiday died of that. A dry climate like Arizona is doctor recommended. The majority of people died of this disease. I never saw Livvy cough blood Did any one see that and I just may have missed it ??
