...if you woke up tomorrow morning in a clapboard house on Walton's Mountain? No modern conveniences.
I would be in nine kinds of hog heaven. The only thing I would miss would be the Internet, but if you guys were all there it wouldn't matter anyways.

I know I could survive! The church I grew up going to had an outhouse (complete with the smell & wasps), My Mamaw & I would use a chamberpot at night when I spent the night with her. Then in the morning we had to empty it & wash it out. She even still made lye soap! She & Papaw also never owned a vehicle in their lives so I knew how to get around by bike, foot or wagon at their house.
I grew up chopping wood, starting fires in the fireplace (keeping the fire going & safely getting rid of the ashes), tending a garden, canning & sun drying food, feeding livestock, gathering eggs, etc...The only part I would make my self scarce on was when it was time to sell off or kill one of the farm animals.
I have always thought it was strange because back when there was no microwaves, washing machines, tractors and such everyone had time to be a neighbor to each other, get together for socials, meals and all. Now we have all of this "time saving" equipment but no one has time for each other now.
What I would have trouble doing without is air conditioning! LOL!!
I would be grateful that newspapers would still be king along with news on the radio. The way newspapers are going out today is sad to me....give me a newspaper any day....to me nothing can replace a "newspaper clipping."
I had a Great *Aunt Bertha that lived in a shack with dirt floors, no indoor plumbing and a bare light bulb hanging from a cord for lighting. The sad part is she was the oldest of her siblings & she worked to put one of her sisters, *Penny, through college. The understanding was that later Aunt Penny would pay her back. She never did, but she became extremely wealthy!
I have always thought how could she live with herself, knowing what her sister Bertha done for her & have no problem with Bertha living in poverty. I always enjoyed being around my Great Aunt Bertha, she was very very nice & sweet. But my Great Aunt Penny had a haughtiness about her!
*Not their real first names

Friends of mine have a home built circa 1820 and, because of the construction, placement on the property logistically, and ALBERT (a huge old elm), they do not need A/C..... at all !!! It has cost them quite a bit of money to keep Albert going, but they wouldn't have it any other way

*Giggles* we can have indoor plumbing. But to imagine a world where people still talk to each other...where children play outside and with each other...where things are simpler. It sounds like absolute Heaven.
Don't forget, tracilynn, we'd all be there so you wouldn't miss us.

I could live like the Waltons did, no problem. They had hot water, electricity and indoor plumbing and that's all I would need.

I think that I'd do okay .... 'cept for the absence of air conditiong. Several days ago it became apparent that the pipe that drains the condensation from the central air unit in the furnance was plugged up. The HVAC repair people were not going to be able to get out here for 2-3 days. Well, that was not going to work for me since it's in the triple digets here. So, to the amazement of my husband (and myself) I took it upon myself to fix it. Now, I don't do well with the heat or spiders (there were a few) but I did it! The utility room is just that ~ a small room with the furnance and water heater. I turned it off, raided my husbands work shop for the tools that I needed and got busy. I cried just a little and cussed alot but by darn I DID IT!

Like others have said, I would mainly miss the internet (and watching The Waltons ) whenever they part ways with a friend The Narrator says something like "we exchanged letters for a while but now I haven't heard from them in forty years..." or something like that! The internet is a good way to keep in touch with people and I'd miss it a lot.

Rhonda, I forgot about the heat and humidity. I grew up in a big two-story white house quite similar to the Waltons and I remember the heat, but in ND we didn't have humidity. I recall those metal fans with the cloth-covered cords! I have one in the basement but the cord needs to be replaced.
Well done on the repair job! Nothing wrong with a little cryin' and cursin' once in awhile!

Overall, I think I'd do rather well. The lack of A/C would be the hardest for me to contend with (I like 65 degree temperatures). I would miss the internet, but not much else. Television overall is really poor these days, so no serious loss there.
During the Depression era, there was indoor plumbong, electricity, gas, automobiles, radio, telephones. Some were in short supply and expensive, but nonelessless they existed.
While I'm not the greatest at fixing cars, I am pretty handy around the house, having plumbed, roofed, dry walled, etc. Plus, I'm good in the yard. I don't know my way around barnyard animals, but the thought of dealing with them fascinates me. I do understand the crop side of the equation,
The lack of modern day medicines would be a concern - polio hit the USA big right after WWII. Lots of childhood ailments back then as well.
WAIT!! There would be no Little Caesar's pizza!! Doing without that may be too great a sacrifice, lemme tell ya. That stuff is De-Lish!

I would not do well! I can't imagine NO heating pad! That's like my bestest friend LOL Not to mention no A/C, after the past 2 days of 100-104 temps on top of a hot flash, I don't know how they done it
