In this episode Olivia is diagnosed with TB and leaves for the sanitarium. Was this written for Michael Learned to leave the show for some reason or was Mr. Hamner's mother sick? Olivia doesn't return for some time.

I think it was probably written for Michael to leave the show.

I think it was probably written for Michael to leave the show. I always thought that was the reason. Does anyone know why she left the show? I read somewhere that Richard agreed to do 5 seasons and planned to move on to other things.

Yeah, she wanted out. Why? I think she was tired.

She said she was physically exhausted and just couldn't do it anymore.

That was possibly the saddest episode of all. When all the kids are gathered around to tell her goodbye was so heartbreaking. I cry every time I see it.

I watched that one the other day when it was on. My understanding is that it was written as an exit for Mr Learned to leave the show and the rigors of the amount of work it takes for a series. It was sad when the news returned that she was ill. I liked Jim Bob's accordion song he played for her. A great episode.... ZnE

Great episode, but one that I don't pull out of the DVD case very often - it's just too sad .

It was a sad episode. That's also when the show really changed, for me anyway, ( I don't want to speak for everyone), things were just not the same after that.

how realistic is that episode? ya think in real life olivia would have left? if she did, wouldnt the family moved to the same town as the hospital? maybe not the whole family-most of them were out of school by that time- but no way Elizabeth stays in waltons mt in real life? does she?

In the reality of the times, it probably wouldn't be feasible for the whole family to pick up and move.
Michael exiting left a huge void in the show, but no way could they have recast so I think they probably did the best they could.
By the way, I'm not a huge fan of this eppy because it makes my cry like a little baby.

In real life, there is no way Livy would have left the kids and for sure, she would never, ever have left the love of her life.

I saw the same episode this week and cried. Although I have see it several times, my first as middle aged and it is interesting to note Michael had a little moment with each of the kids throughout the episode. It was very evident it was painful for all of them as actors.
