scenes where he really brought the intensity and was pretty scary.
1. The episode where Ben stole John boys ride and brought that girl to meet her mother. Remember that scene in The living room and Ben refused to tell John why he took it. I thought John was going to lay the smack down on Ben rigth there " I could beat it out of ya.." 2. When John Thought The indian kid was going to burn the Barn down-It looked like John was going to kill that kid.
He was pretty scary -unusal for the character-but very CONVINCING.

Yeah John could get very mad at the right time but not abusive. He got his point across with his words and you knew it when he got mad enough. My grandpa was kind of like that but he was a kind good person most of the time unless he got really mad with good reason but he was never abusive kind of like John Walton. You never forget the lesson! Best wishes wmfan Oh you forgot the scene in the Boy from the CCC when John caught the young man trying to steal the family money in the dark kitchen and he held a gun up to him to warn him no but he never shot him just a knowing stare at the guy stealing.

I just watched the episode where Ben leaves home and goes to work for the rival lumber company unknowing the family is trying to win a contract from them. When Olivia wants to go after Ben John gets so mad he's screaming about no supper being fixed I think it goes to show just what a great actor he is.

John lost his temper, but I don't think he was abusive at all. I like when he was in a bad mood, and Ben shot the rock with his sling shot at the flower pot hanging from the porch, and John and Livvy were underneath it...the look on his face was priceless.

I just watched that episode last night where Ben take JB's car without permission. When John Sr. gets angry, it's kinda scary. Seems funny he goes from such a calm man to such a fury like that. I would do the same if my boy talked to me like that. ;D

Usually the calm, quiet ones are the ones that blow up occasionally.
Ralph is a fantastic actor. He was the perfect Daddy. There was a scene where the boys were fighting and he grabbed them and shoved one of them away. My mom was like, "Wow, they'd never show that today!" And she's right.
The way I was raised, parents were in charge and spankings were allowed (but were hardly ever necessary). Things are sure different now.

Quiet calm ones are that way dewlanna. My grandfather was the same way a good man but he let you know with a message unabusive but stern with a look or harsh words when he was mad and making a point like Ralph Waite/John. Best wishes wmfan

I was going to start a thread about this, but found this one via search.
Ralph Waite's portrayal of John was perfect, imo, and I personally loved when he would get angry. Nobody got angry like he did. There are some great examples in this thread. The scene where the boys are fighting mentioned by Heather above is from The Bequest when Jason and I think Jim Bob are fighting over leftover money from their $3 and he just grabbed them by the scruff of their necks. Absolutely incredible.
Two of my favorite scenes not mentioned yet include the episode where the one family accuses John of stealing their china. When Sheriff Bridges is there and John tells John Boy to go inside. John Boy doesn't and when the Sheriff leaves John Boy tries to talk to John but is quickly reprimanded and sent inside. Its really intense and awesome.
The other scene comes from The Easter Story when Olivia has polio. When most of the family gives up hope and John Boy runs up the mountain with John following him. John starts to tell him that he has to accept what is happening and increasingly gets angry at what is happening himself as he tries to soothe John Boy. Its probably my favorite scene from any single character/actor in the series.
Any others I'm missing from Ralph?

Uncle Coaster,
I totally agree with you about the scene from the Easter Story. I was moved to tears when I saw this scene for the first time and it touches me every time when I remember it.

Yeah, That scene in The Easter Story is probably the best scene in the series.
