I was wondering if anyone ever heard of other people who had tried out for the parts of the Walton family. I heard somewhere that Ron Howard had tried out for the part of John-Boy, but Richard Thomas got the part instead. I don't know if this is true or not. He would not have been out of place among the rest of the mostly red headed children.

I think that Henry Fonda was asked to play John SR. but declined.

I can definitely see Ron Howard as John-Boy-those same, wholesome, apple-pie good looks.

Richard Thomas as JB had an earthy sexiness about him. Ron Howard was cute, but a minus in the sexy dept.

What about Jim-Bob? He had bright blue eyes and a mischievous smile that made girls swoon (and give him their hair ribbons without him asking).

Yeah, Jim Bob had a sexiness about him too, when he got older.

On the subject of casting -- this one's for you, Debby -- I can't imagine anyone doing a better job than David Harper did as the youngest son. And, I love the way his character developed during the run of the series. I guess he and Richard Thomas are my favorites of the kids.....

I recall reading -- I think it was in an online preview of Mary McDonough's book, but I'm not sure -- that David Harper was a *natural* when he played Jim-Bob. He was just so believeable without putting much effort into it.

Everyone did a great job of acting, but Jim Bob stood out because he was so convincing for such a young age. Outstanding!
