The Waltons, as in Little House have what seems to be dominint women as store owners with somewhat meek husbands. Is this something that was frequent back then, was a man running a store looked down upon, somewhat less than manly? Just wondering.

Ike always struck me as one who lacked self esteem. He wasn't a young man when he married Corrabeth, and he felt "lucky" that she married him, never feeling she really loved him. He feared being alone again, so he put up with a lot to keep her. The time she did leave him he was a mess.

I don't think so...it just made for interesting tv. Could you imagine LHOTP without a strong Harriet Oleson? Corabeth and Harriet made for good tv, because they were so different than the other female leads.
