In thinking about going barefoot, I was reminded of the mocassins my grandparents made for us kids for use when spending summers at their farm ... they didn't permit going barefoot either outside or in the house. These simple mocs were made from deerskin which they tanned themselves, and my grandma sewed herself. And, they were meant to "save" our store-bought shoes!
All of a sudden I thought, wait a minute, the Waltons never had venison !! I thought ALL country folk took deer for the food and hides..... I'm pretty sure we ate more venison up there than any other meat.
I don't remember deer ever being mentioned on The Waltons except for Erin's pet, Lance. WHY NOT ?? Any idea? They must have been plentiful in that area.....

Hmmm... I guess I don't recall them talking about eating venison either! Seems the only hunting they did of wild critters was turkey?

No, there was a scene where John was hunting on a Sunday and Livey got mad, but got over it when John put some (quail ?) on the table and she said (as she picked them up) "these will go great with biscuits and gravy" and then grandma took them from her to clean them.

This scene was copied from Little House where Charles Ingalls worked to finish a job on a Sunday morning and Caroline gave him a verbal pasting.

Let's see, The Waltons started up about two years before Little House!! It stands to reason that a lot of the themes would be similar -- both shows were about rural, close-knit families. Love them both!

Remember John-Boy and Jenny's conversation when they were pretending to be Rome and Rebecca Lee?
He asks what's for supper and she says "Venison steak", to which he emphatically replies, "Venison steak??? Venison steak?? Venison steak in the morning, venison steak at night!"

I saw an episode the other day where Johnboy comes out of the house and sees John and John tells him he is going hunting. I believe that he said something about "the deer being up on the ridge this time of day". I'm sure that is not the exact line. It was just on the other day and for the life of me I can't remember the name of the episode. This will drive me crazy now.

I'm sure venizon was quite popular to eat since it was plentiful. Maybe they just did not want to tell the children what they were eating, since Erin loved Lance so much.
