I would think if just one person were writing the Walton's episodes over the years things would have been more in context with dates and the such, but being that there was I bet a group of writers that came and went over the years helped to keep things messed up somewhat. "The Hardy Boys" books come to mind, as they were written by different writers over the decades, books revised and rewritten, ages changed, etc.

My scenario -- if Curt experienced anything like my uncle, he may have been on a hospital ship (several were used after the attack) and later sent to a mainland hospital. If he were not going back into service (unlike my uncle -- a Navy man who ended up on a destroyer once able) -- he may have found it quite easy to make his way to Florida. He could have even placed his dog tags on a corpse prior to sneaking away !!!
Now, as to the episodes. Not my favorites, either. But, I do applaud the writers for stepping "out of the box" occasionally. It's always worth an attempt....
And, I wonder if these episodes were largely disliked so much because of the nature of Curt's injuries !!

I guess what bothers so much is the fact the I like Mary Ellen and Curt together and I thought Jonesy was too wimpy for Mary Ellen. I liked the way Curt and Mary Ellen sparked with each other. I do think Curt's death was very powerful tv and hate to think that they diminish it with him being alive. I would love to know what Judy Norton (and the rest of the cast) thought of these episodes.

Bringing Curt back to life was one of those episodes towards the end where they ran out of ideas and were grasping at straws. My personal opinion is that it was one of the worst episodes. I can't even bear to watch it again.

The Disney Version of Back Home with Hayley Mills was so good and it overlooked one of the episodes in the book by Michelle Margorian about Virginia's mother's friend marrying an American GI and then they found out that this friend's husband had been later rescued from a Japanese prison in Burma just after VJ Day, This was similar to what they said happened to Curt.,,,,

Much has been said about the later episodes, war-time, having been lacking.... and, so, I wonder if perhaps it is more difficult to write about war-time for what was mostly a very upbeat show.... I'm sure the writers struggled with that.... Would have been fun to see the ensuing boom years!
