We recently watched an episode where Mary Ellen travels to another place along with a girlfriend of Kurt. It began as it had been a part one and this was part two.
Sorry, I cant recall the name of the episode we watched but will as soon as I post this.
If someone can recall these two episodes , sure would love to hear.
Thanks, PLW

The Whirlwind and the Tempest. It is when Curt comes back from the "dead."
THE WHIRLWIND (22 Jan 1981)
"As World War Two was gradually consigned to the pages of history life on Waltons Mountain began returning to normal. Store shelves bulged with food and other goods that had been scarce during the fighting. And families were reunited as the young men headed home. But peace didn't necessarily mean an end to turbulence, life would always somehow manage to keep us off balance".
Coming home on leave Jim Bob thumbs a lift from a passing car. Going down the twisting mountain road, the driver, Jonesy, finds the brakes have failed. The car leaves the road at a sharp bend and ends upsidedown. Having just passed them, Mary Ellen and Jason turn round and come to the rescue. Back at the Waltons house, Mary Ellen says Jonesy must stay to rest for a while. Jim Bob undertakes to repair the car and Ben gives Jonesy a temporary job helping in the mill. Jonesy and Mary Ellen fall in love and agree to get married. Then a lady arrives with news of Curt, who was believed to have been killed four years ago at Pearl Harbor. With his car now repaired, Jonesy leaves to continue his travels while Mary Ellen goes to find out if it really is Curt.
Jason has bought the Dew Drop Inn which had lain derelict for some time but, faced with the indiference of the family, tries to renovate it all on his own. With only one day left before his planned re-opening, the family comes to his aid and even the disapproving Corabeth has to admit to its charming atmosphere on the opening night.
THE TEMPEST (5 Feb 1981)
"A chill settled on Waltons Mountain that first autumn after the conclusion of the Second World War. Mary Ellen had been caught up in a whirlwind love affair that seemed certain to add a new member to the family. But a storm was brewing to the south, a storm that ended her romance and called her to a distant part of the country in search of a man she believed to be dead".
When she arrives in Florida she does find Curt, but he is a very changed man and doesn't love her any more. After staying a few days Mary Ellen comes to realise that there is no way they can grow together again, so she returns to Waltons Mountain.
While Mary Ellen was away, Jonesy had decided not to continue on his travels and had been working for J.D.Pickett who has fired Erin unjustly. Jonesy stands up to J.D. and gets Erin her job back, but this time on much more favorable terms.

Sure.... I guess your main question is how Mary Ellen came to be in Florida with hubby..... In the first episode, a close friend of Curt (a woman) travelled to Walton's Mountain to let Mary Ellen know that Curt had in fact not died at Pearl Harbar and that he was living in FL.... she's a very caring friend and thought it might help Curt if his wife and he reconciled, or at least achieved some closure.... Of course, Mary Ellen made her plans to go see him.... Does that help?

I have mentioned this several times before going back more than 10 years on this and the previous forums but most do not recall since I last made a post regarding these two most disliked episodes, Here is the only way you can possibly identify with these epsiodes,,,,and that is recall what was going on when the episodes took place,,,, The day the Dew Drop Inn reopened and Curt was repoted alive by Betty Howell (October 2,1945) the Chicago Cubs who had been in numerous World Series only to lose going back to their last World Series Championship in 1908, surprised even their most fanatical fans by opening the first post-World War II series with a surprisingly easy win over the Detroit Tigers and Hank Greenberg, However, subsequently the Cubs in that series would end up losing in 7 games and would never be in another World Series although they would just fall short in 1969,1984, 1998, and then just miss in 2003 due to fan interference,,,,,,

df, you've got me confused, or maybe I missed something, but who here would be following what went on in baseball when a certain episode took place?

I had just posted these items---because The Tempest and The Whirlwind were the most universally disliked episodes of the entire series. I had done that once before on the previous forum about 8=11 years ago, In order to find some way to even like these episodes you might have to think about what was going on when these episodes supposedly took place,
Also someone posted that after Pearl Harbor there were travel restrictions placed on the Hawaiian Islands and nobody could leave the islands without recieving permission and clearance of the military, So there was really no way Curt could have made it to Florida from Hawaii in 1942, That part of the episode was totally fictitous and the scriptwriter was ignorant of the facts of the case when he wrote it,

And just WHY do we think Curt couldn't have gotten permission from the military ?? Seems to me it would have been easy, considering his wounds and mental state.
I can understand that many folks did not like these episodes, but I can think of many which I disliked even more.
To each his own.

hate those episodes...it would be difficult to leave Hawaii if you had no identification especially if you were trying a new identity. To me those episodes have a soap opera feel...bringing some one back from the dead. It really diminishes Day of Infamy to me. I thought Day of Infamy was one of the best episodes. I think the writing on the Waltons is much better than that of a soap opera, so I expect more and those 2 episodes just don't cut it for me.

shucks, these two epioides were not shown or missed them ... There are countless mistakes made in the writings of The Waltons ... why, I don't know and it actually doesnt bother me at all. We enjoyed the Waltons very much but mostly the older ones as the last ones were written so it was difficult at times to know it was the Walton family.
Has anyone ever questioned or got answers from the writers why they did not have to be historically correct? only curious.
