Do you find the length of Elizabeth's dresses to be too short by today's standards?
They seem so short. I remember my skirts being that short as if that was the thing to do to little girls. I can't help but think that the bad people would watch those scenes. Yuk

My wife mentioned the same thing, just he other day. I think they were a little short when she was in the first few seasons. I sure hope that kind of people don't even watch the show.

Wow! I've always thought the same thing...especially when that kid with the lousy attitude stayed there for a few days. Can't remember the episode, but I think he was from some kind of half way type house. He slept in the barn, was rude and crude at first. I remember seeing Elizabeth and him sitting on the porch talking, and her dress was so short. I wanted to holler at her to get inside and put some pants on! ;D

Sometimes, I think styles of an era creep into historical tv shows, movies, etc. In some of the later seasons, the hair styles & jeans on Mary Ellen & Erin were definately from the 70s. I think the same thing happened with the shorter dresses....I was surprised Grandma Walton never said anything. Times were tough, but most females still covered up in those days (1930s).

Remember when Elizabeth felt she was growing up so fast that her dresses no longer fit and looked like a miniskirt in the 1930s-1940s? She added that that was why they call it the awkward age--AWK AWK!

I'd actually like to hear from someone involved in the decision to keep her in those short dresses long after she'd grown too tall for them, because it was really inappropriate. I was involved with historic costuming, and as a rule short dresses were for very young girls, not those of Elizabeth's age. And they were worn with white or black stockings, like Grandma's. But I've always wondered about their choices when it came to dressing the cast - for instance John-Boy's one pair of pants always bugged me - the off-white colour always looked dirty.

- for instance John-Boy's one pair of pants always bugged me - the off-white colour always looked dirty. I asked about those pants before. I hated them because they looked so dirty. Also, those suspenders he wears that say Boss on them. My brother had a pair of those and they are from a company that makes downhill skiing equipment.

Yes we wore dresses this short when we were super young, maybe 1-3 or 4? Here's a picture of me and two of my sisters. I'm on the far right. My dress was very short, but my sister's were much longer. I notice I started practing my future occupation even at this age. Check out my trigger finger. ;D

That bothered me too. I agree Marilyn dresses were short for girls up to 4. Maybe they had them short because they are learning how to walk and run and they stumble often so the dress being short prevented them from stepping on their dress?

OH and I always thought Johnboy's pants were dirty and I thought how strange because Grandma and Olivia always wanted to keep a clean house. In fact, Olivia siad they may be poor and their clothes maybe hand-me-downs, but at least they were clean. I hated those pants.

ssMarilyn, The dresses you and your sisters are wearing look like quality garments. They also look like the kind of garb I was put in.
Your dresses look longer than Elizabeth's dress

you should see dresses today. (really shorter than back in 1930's) Their like skin tight, show cleavage, & barely cover their thighs. (This is adult dresses.) Like going to the club, parties, & etc...
Marilyn, your cute when you were a child. Cute dress by the way.
I just that episode, when she said Awk Awk. Like two weeks ago.

Makes you wonder not only about the kind of people who design dresses like that for our kids, but also the kind of mom's who buy them!
