So I have made my way through the show and now on to seaason 9. Anyone else find the change in music very bizarre. It just doesn't fit into the atmosphere of the show. Lots of flutes and clarinets. Also sometimes the music is so loud it can be hard to hear what the characters are saying. Would love to know why they went in this direction.

I agree. The music in Season 9 is definitely different. Jerry Goldsmith was the composer of The Waltons theme song, and I think he did the background music in the first few seasons. Alexander Courage also did background music for several seasons. Maybe someone else was responsible for the music in Season 9. I don’t know, but it’s something to research I guess. I have been watching Eight is Enough, and I’ve noticed that some of the background music on that show is very similar to The Waltons season 9 music. Both shows were produced by Lorimar.

This is what I found on the IMDB: Series Music by Alexander Courage ... (157 episodes, 1972-1981) Arthur Morton ... (28 episodes, 1972-1974) Jerry Goldsmith ... (13 episodes, 1972-1973)
It appears that Alexander Courage did the music for Season 9. www.imdb.com/title/tt0068149/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_cl_sm

There was a musicians strike in Hollywood in 1980, and Alexander Courage was part of the guild, so he couldn’t score the shows during the strike. So the Lorimar shows had to use stock music for the first part of the 1980-81 season. I agree, it’s jarring. You’ll find the same issue with “Knots Landing”, “Dallas”, and “Eight is Enough” during that period.
Fortunately, the strike was settled and the regular music returns in the second half of season 9.

Thank you. That makes perfect sense and also explains why I hear the same music on Eight is Enough.
