Grew up a Heathen. Still am. John Ritter for the win of course. I grew up going to Catholic school for 13 years so a love your neighbor heathen was the next step after that brainwashing experience.

Fordwick was very traditional, but the three who followed after John Ritter were much more progressive, with Hank Buchanan being the most progressive of all, and I think that was due to hiring Peter Fox to portray him. I also think that it was intentional in order to add spice to The Waltons. Peter was more suited to being the centrefold in a Playgirl magazine than as a preacher standing behind the pulpit, but in the first episode in which he appeared, both Erin and Corabeth swooned over him, as did Olivia who managed to disguise her true feelings. Perhaps it's considered improper for a pastor to be showing chest hair(?)
People from any generation were not used to 'hunky' pastors. As a pastor, it's the mental attitude that matters, not the body. Before The Waltons, nobody had a problem with pretty nuns: Sally Field and Julie Andrews, for instance. Even in The Waltons (The Calling), Mary Francis Conover (Stacey Nelkin) was a very pretty young lady.
And Marsha Woolery was mentioned accompanying Hank to the Walton home. That was the only episode in which Marsha dressed the way she did. Does anyone know if that was even a fashion during the Depression?
I don't know. I love my preacher as the man of God but never thought of him that way. I'm not sure if I'd want my preacher to be a "hunk" lol I'm pretty sure dressing like that wasn't acceptable.

Not the Waltons, but I love the "dishy vicar" on "Keeping Up Appearances"

I grew up Baptist and raised my daughter Baptist. I still attend a Baptist church. Coming from a Baptist church where the majority of the parishioners are black, I was also particularly fond of the preaching of James Trevis Clark from the episode The Fighter. The way he delivered his sermon in the barn is similar to the way my own pastor delivers a message. I also loved how he took John Boy's Children's Bible stories for Elizabeth and delivered it on that Sunday at the church.

I always liked Reverend Hank Buchanan. He was a young and contemporary preacher.

I did like Rev. Matthew Fordwick, especially after he hit rock bottom and became humble. He was a very caring and tried to give his advice when needed.
I also loved when John Boy gave the sermon that one time.
