Mainly acrobat dancing in WEST SIDE STORY but brilliant. I couldn't do it anymore. Too old, but, the cast in the film were brilliant. Especially Russ Tamblyn who was equally brilliant in SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS. Another fantastic musical. Love the old films. Classics Russ Tamblyn is incredible  love him. If I remember, didn't you play Chino once? I think you told me that  Russ Tamblyn is that style of dancer . If you look at what he did in like the JET SONG and OFFICER KRUPKE and even the choreography of the fight scene with Bernardo which I thought was brilliant it had a lot of those acrobatic/gymnastic type moves involved in the choreographer. The other dancers who were equally as great as him including Bernardo-George Chakiris were more your standard Jazz, Comtemporary and Ballet dancers. I suppose they could do it all really. When I watch West Side Story and especially the original one I focus on the dancing mostly because that is what I do. I love dancing. I have noticed that the actor who played Baby John in the movie is extremely intense in his dancing and incredible. Watch him in the dance sequence COOL. Anybodys is also a very technically sound dancer if you watch her really closely. You are also correct about Russ Tamblyn in comparing his dance style in SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS. The things he does while up on the log are acrobatic moves. That is another fantastic show and one I would love to be in someday and play one of the girls that is courted by the brothers. |

And he was only 18 during filming! Wow. That's so cool, Emmy! Everyone in that cast were tremendous dancers. Rita Moreno is just amazing. Really the only ones that were not dancers that didn't play adults in the movie were cast as actors and they were Natalie Wood(Maria) and Richard Beymer(Tony). In the new cast even the actors who played Tony and Maria could dance. Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler along with their amazing voices could dance. Even though I thought the new West Side Story couldn't compare with the original with the dancing and choreography, I thought the singing was out of this world in the new one. |

Russ Tamblyn wasn't a very big guy, but his legs and arm were very strong. In this choreography it shows a lot of examples of where he has to use the strength in his legs and arms, especially with the choreography with the shovels. If you also watch closely some of those same moves are also used in the choreography during the JET SONG in West Side Story. |

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers was actually before The Fastest Gun Alive. That came out in 1954. Russ Tamblyn definitely along with his dance training had to have done gymnastic training as well. Like I said, if you watch some of the choreography in the West Side Story JET SONG where Russ performs that song, he does some of the same exact choreographed moves he does in that dance you posted in The Fastest Gun Alive several years earlier. |
