Thanks to you all for the information. I suppose the location of The Schuyler B&B, The Waltons museum etc is more to do with Earl Hamners home territory than The Waltons programmes in that case ? Yes - people who know both Virginia and California say the vegetation is all wrong in the show. I *think* (and I'm a Brit) that California is more pine trees whereas Virginia is more deciduous?

In light of this info would I be correct in assuming that the internal scenes were filmed in a studio ? Were the scenes on the mountains filmed in The Blue Ridge mountains though or just trick filming? Yes, in general, the "indoors" scenes (e.g. the supper table, John-Boy's bedroom etc.) were done in a studio. Warner Bros studio in Burbank, to be precise (stages 20 and 26). The outside house was on the same lot, about 5-minutes' walk away. For local scenes outside (e.g. outside Ike's shop, or Drucilla's pond etc.), this was done on the same bit of the lot as the house. General establishing panoramas of mountains were just stock shots. When they needed to show the surrounding area in more detail, they would generally go north to the Los Padres (Frazier Park), Sequoia, and Angeles National Forests. The show never locationed outside California (except for the "Decade" Virginia bits). There are a couple of "mountain" bits which seem to be done inside the studio with back projection. But, given the standards of the time, it's done reasonably well and may not be noticeable by most. This is unlike most of the car scenes from Season 2 onwards, which have diabolically bad BP. One "set" which seems to have been a location thing (rather than on an indoor stage) might be the schoolroom (especially earlier). The sound is very "live" on that. Listen in a couple of the early episode where John-Boy is talking to Miss Hunter. That may well have been inside the actual building which was also the outside. If you follow Kami Cotler on Facebook (I posted a link awhile back), you’ll learn a lot about the filming, the sets, the locations, etc. She posted once that the schoolhouse really was set up as a schoolroom, and school scenes were actually filmed inside the building. I was right about the schoolroom then! You wouldn't know from the look of it, but the sound gives it away. Of course, in general terms, you can sometimes tell whether a set is indoors or not by looking back through the windows or an open door. If there looks to be genuine foliage -- especially if it's moving -- it's real. If it looks like a couple of pot plants standard forlornly in front of a crappy backdrop, then that's on a stage!

The barn and sawmill also had real working interiors.

Nope, wrong -- there are plenty of pine trees in Virginia..... both Virginia and California have pines and deciduous ..... One thing that would be totally weird is if we saw any desert land on The Waltons !! Or, glaciers !!

Here is Kami’s post about the schoolhouse: There's one episode when John-Boy has driven to a nearby town (Rockfish, Charlottesvile, Westham - I can't remember). He gets out of his car on the Midwestern Street set which is standing in for this town, and guess what's clearly shown behind him? Yes, the school back on the mountain! Oops!

AGAIN a big thank you to all of you for this information. It is my intention next year to attend The Waltons reunion and visit Schuyler to see the new B&B, THE Hamners home and The Waltons Museum. I would like to visit Burbank to see the Waltons set but I doubt there is much,or any of it still standing?

To alanankrett1 and others: Posting images on the Forum. There are two options you can post an image to the forum. Option 1. Attach an image In the top right-hand corner of the text pane you will see the Attach an Image button. When you click on it a box will appear. On on the left. Click on the add files button. To add files find the image on your disc drive or wherever you have it, then click open to upload the file. To insert your image take your cursor to where you want it within the text pane and then click insert and then done. If you don't do this then the image will be appended at the end of the post. The one drawback to attaching images is you're limited to three attachments. If you want to put more into your post, then you will need to use an image host such as PostImage. PosImage postimg.cc/. Option 2. Via an image hosting site. When you open up the site, I would suggest you open an account. For this you'll need to provide an email address. Once you have done this a message will appear which will tell you that an email has been sent to the address you provided this will contain your password. Copy the password then go back to PostImage and sign in with the email address you provided and then enter the password you received in that email. When you've signed in you will see your email address in blue on the right-hand side to the right of My Images. Mine has been removed . When you click on this it will take you to Settings. Go down to Change Password and change it from the one you received in your email to what ever you want. Click Change My Password which should take you back to the home page. At the moment I have 3 images in the default gallery. By default any image you upload will go into it. However, you may wish to create a specific gallery, say one for Richard Thomas or the Walton's house. To do this click on Create a new gallery and enter its name. This is what you should see when you've created the new gallery Now we're ready to upload pictures to Richard Thomas. To do this click where it says empty. Click on Choose images and find the image you wish to upload. This folder has three images, you can upload a singe image or you can batch upload all three. To do this hold down the CTRL key then click each of the images in turn. When you let go of the CTRL key all three images will be uploaded. There are a number of ways you can upload an image to the forum, the way I do it is via the direct link. Take your cursor down to the first image and then click on it. Almost immediately you'll see this box. When you place your cursor in the Direct link box, the text will be highlighted. Copy the link and return to the forum to post your image.
Click on the button with the red arrow and then enter the URL of the image and paste the URL. Thumbnail for website. By using this option you needn't click on the Image icon above, just copy the Thumbnail for forums text and paste it directly within the text pane. Just ignore the other codes. Attachments:

Joe-Zeb, I think it's time for me to create a folder on my system in which to collect (and re-capture) all of your "technical info and directions" postings -- wish I'd started it long ago !!

Joe-Zeb, I think it's time for me to create a folder on my system in which to collect (and re-capture) all of your "technical info and directions" postings -- wish I'd started it long ago !! I spent quite a bit of time putting that post together, copying screen captures and then pasting them into a graphics program where they were cropped and resized. When an image was ready it was uploaded to PostImage and then downloaded to the forum where I added the text. As soon as one image and associated text was posted I got on with the next, until the post was ready to be created.
