I have recently been emailed a photograph of a house that someone is claiming to be the original Waltons house. Would like to send it to Waltons FORUM so our expert members can have a look and see what they say. If is a fake I would be curious to know where this picture was taken also. I am not geeky and don't know how to do these things so a bit of advice and help would be appreciated. I might be able to email it if you can give me an email address. Any advice would be appreciated on how to send it to Waltons FORUM

The house they originally used on the show stood on a backlot... it burned down... was rebuilt and used in Gilmore Girls (I think)... FYI, it was just a 3-sided shell... John-Boy had to climb up a scaffold to "his" window.....
There's a thread here somewhere with all the info, or you can probably just Google it....

I know there are posts here on the forum about the Walton house, but I can’t seem to find them right now. Jeri is correct. The original house burnt down sometime in the 1980s or 90s. It was rebuilt for the 1990s movies, and if I remember correctly, it was built in a different area of the Warner Bros lot. In 2012 I went to the California Waltons reunion and took a tour of the Waltons-related Warner Bros sites led by Earl Hamner himself. We visited the house site. It was slightly different from the tv house, possibly changed when it was used on Gilmore Girls as the Dragonfly Inn. It was painted yellow and had 4 dormers instead of 3, but it was definitely the Walton house and barn, and it was such an exciting experience seeing that house and walking up onto the porch with Earl Hamner. I have pictures somewhere. When I find them, I’ll share them here.
You can can email the picture to me at grade1teacher@frontier.com, and I’ll post it on the forum if you want me to.

Here is some good info about the filming locations of The Waltons. The original house was located on the Warner Bros lot. The reconstructed house was located on the Warner Bros Ranch. All About The Waltons: The Locations

Brenda, was it a real house?Yes, it was a real building, meaning you could open the door and walk inside. There was nothing inside the house though, just a lot of boards and things. There were no rooms. It seems like there was a ladder or some sort of stairs, because I remember some people actually went up there and looked out John Boy’s window. I didn’t go up there though. I can’t remember if there was a wall in the back or if it was open.

Yes, Brenda's pictures above are for the rebuild on Warner's Ranch set. It's about a mile from the original lot. The look it has there (the yellow and the green) is the paint scheme it had when used in "The Gilmore Girls" as The Dragonfly. I understand it, too, has now gone, with the walls apparently put into storage (this may just be to assuage fans though - I can't see why a big studios would want to store a load of wood walling - easier to build something again).

In light of this info would I be correct in assuming that the internal scenes were filmed in a studio ? Were the scenes on the mountains filmed in The Blue Ridge mountains though or just trick filming?

Yes, as said above, interior scenes were shot in a studio.... most of the mountain/countryside were filmed in CA, northeast of L.A.

In light of this info would I be correct in assuming that the internal scenes were filmed in a studio ? Were the scenes on the mountains filmed in The Blue Ridge mountains though or just trick filming? Yes, in general, the "indoors" scenes (e.g. the supper table, John-Boy's bedroom etc.) were done in a studio. Warner Bros studio in Burbank, to be precise (stages 20 and 26). The outside house was on the same lot, about 5-minutes' walk away. For local scenes outside (e.g. outside Ike's shop, or Drucilla's pond etc.), this was done on the same bit of the lot as the house. General establishing panoramas of mountains were just stock shots. When they needed to show the surrounding area in more detail, they would generally go north to the Los Padres (Frazier Park), Sequoia, and Angeles National Forests. The show never locationed outside California (except for the "Decade" Virginia bits). There are a couple of "mountain" bits which seem to be done inside the studio with back projection. But, given the standards of the time, it's done reasonably well and may not be noticeable by most. This is unlike most of the car scenes from Season 2 onwards, which have diabolically bad BP. One "set" which seems to have been a location thing (rather than on an indoor stage) might be the schoolroom (especially earlier). The sound is very "live" on that. Listen in a couple of the early episode where John-Boy is talking to Miss Hunter. That may well have been inside the actual building which was also the outside.

There are photos somewhere on the forum showing the sort-of "shell" (two-sided) exterior house but with usable front-door... and with the scaffolding John-Boy used to get up to his bedroom window....

Thanks to you all for the information. I suppose the location of The Schuyler B&B, The Waltons museum etc is more to do with Earl Hamners home territory than The Waltons programmes in that case ?
