I'm not sure that John Boy had a college degree. He was only on the show for 5 seasons, and he was in high school for the first 2 seasons. He started college at the beginning of season 3. Season 5 would have been his third year. Also, there was no graduation. I think the family would have had a huge celebration for a college graduation. Earl Hamner didn't finish his degree until after his military service. In "tv time" it would not necessarily take 4 years to complete 4 years of college.... The "lapse" in no celebration could well have been overshadowed by the war.... or, if post-war, other family tragedies.... just some thoughts....

I always thought that final scene in “The Valediction” would have made for a good series finale rather than the misguided in many ways ninth season. I agree with Brenda, very dramatic in a good way!

Just a thought about whether or not John Boy had a degree. Remember the episode where he was trying to get a job teaching at his former school and he ended up not only doing a presentation on live TV for the first time, but seemingly got the job to develop some kind of television department. How could he even be considered to be a college professor without a degree?

How could he even be considered to be a college professor without a degree? Good point ... but he may not have been a full-blown professor -- even today, colleges have many instructors who have not necessarily completed their Master degrees (much less, doctorates) but are on the faculty in an "Associate" position.... Even in the "better" colleges, students do not usually "experience" a professor until senior year when their work is almost entirely quite independent and professors contribute as "behind-the-scene" mentors. Their value to the school lies in their published papers and ability to attract donors !! ... Meanwhile, students wade through a slew of "instructors with varying backgrounds." ... Heaven knows what it was like back in the 1940's. Did we ever hear John-Boy referred to as a professor ?

The "lapse" in no celebration could well have been overshadowed by the war.... or, if post-war, other family tragedies.... just some thoughts.... "Upon graduation from Schuyler High School, Hamner entered the University of Richmond on a scholarship. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and received training in the demolition of land mines. On the battlefield, such an occupation has a life expectancy of thirty to forty seconds for the demolisher as well as those around him. Fortunately, the Army reconsidered and assigned Earl to a Quartermaster Corps unit in Paris where he served without demolishing himself or any of his fellow soldiers. While Earl never became a boulevardier he did learn how to get from Opera to Auberville on the Metro and how to order ouefs et jambon in a French restaurant. Upon his return to as civilian life Hamner worked at radio station WMBG in Richmond. He furthered his education at Northwestern University and graduated from the University of Cincinnati". www.the-waltons.com/earl.htmlSince Earl was drafted into the army while in college he wasn't able to finish college until sometime after the war ended. This is likely why we didn't see John Boy graduate.
