Talking about FDR and his mistress, I won't go into this in depth, but I have a DVD and it is the story of FDR and his mistress. A lovely film by the way, shame I can't remember what it is called, but it is worth watching.

Just teasing Ned because of FDR's main reason for spending time at Warm Springs.... plus, wanted to bring up what so many of us went through in the 50's regarding polio...
BTW -- when quoting, you can start your text directly beneath the box of quoted text... otherwise, there's no obvious link -- just a repeated text box, as occurred in your reply above.

My dad had polio as a boy in the 1930s and missed a year of school while convalescing. His mom rubbed his legs every night. Incidentally, this fact kept him from being recruited into the army later.

My father's brother Varick (math professor at Alfred U.) married my Aunt Lil whose younger sister had polio (also from the 30's) .. "Carol Jean" had many ailments over the years, including leukemia, and she had to wear her leg braces her entire life... she did, however, outlive all of her "caretakers" and accomplished much during her life -- was a fairly well-known regional artist and crafter.

Oh yes I remember your tales about your uncle from Alfred U. I went to college not far from there, and our track team had a meet on their wooden indoor track ever winter! Is there a place to check out any of Carol Jean's art? Also in Western NY? Thankfully Dad had a complete recovery and doing fairly well at 88 in PA. He worked as an elementary teacher for over thirty years, especially enjoying science class! I appreciate your asking! Must tell Mom and Dad about you! My wife's grandmother Jovita (here in Ecuador) died on Friday morning at 88 after a massive heart attack two Thursdays ago. She had been in a coma. We are glad that she is no longer suffering, although it is hard for her husband, children (including my mother-in-law), grandchildren (Marisol et al), and great-grandchildren (including our four). I served as the moderator at the funeral, shared a testimony and sang a song. It was a fitting tribute to a wonderful matriarch, not unlike in many ways, Grandma on "The Waltons." I can share more if anyone is interested.

And, I share your passion for reading. Simply cannot imagine not having a book in my hand. Has opened up a whole new world for me!

Thanks Carol for your condolences. Jovita was a remarkable woman. She raised 7 children, like Olivia Walton, and worked as the cook at a plantation for wealthy patrons making bread in a wood-burned oven, cooking without electricity, running water, etc. Certainly a different era! And the patrons adored her. Her husband ran the farm, milked all the cows by hand, led them to pasture each day, oversaw the garden, and all. Wonderful stories to share!

Very sorry to hear about Jovita -- a difficult time for your family, I'm sure.... and, I join Kimberly in our interest to hear more, whatever you'd like to relate.
Including your singing voice !!
Carol Jean was a painter in water colors -- I luckily possess one of them -- a shoreline viewed from sandy dunes, tall grasses, and an old, decaying, upturned rowboat.... beautiful... also have some Christmas ornaments she crafted from tin cans, of all things -- snipped into multi-multi-pointed stars !! She also knitted, crocheted.... She lived with her parents most of her life, necessarily, but eventually (as a "ward of the state") was taken care of by a succession of three women, all of whom she outlived. The last one moved her from Port Chester NY (on Long Island Sound) to Massachusetts because MA offered much better care possibilities... in both Port Chester and MA (near Boston but can't remember town) Carol Jean was able to sell her works in many, many small gift shops and other boutiques.... this allowed her some of her own spending money, providing a degree of independence.

My mother also contracted polio as a young child and was fortunate to make a complete recovery. My mother got everything--measles, chicken pox, whopping cough, mumps.

We were pre-vaccines, so my two sisters and I all had measles, mumps, chicken pox....
It's not possible for me ever to forget the mumps -- because it was Easter time, and I insisted on wearing my new bonnet, which Mom could barely tie under my chin, the mumps were so large.... there are pictures !!!
