I've always enjoyed seeing what the cast of the Waltons were wearing in the show . I enjoy that time period, and I must say, that all the cast members wore clothes that suited them...in particular, the Baldwins, Corabeth and Ike and the bowtie and Grandpa and his overalls... Ike and John-Boy were definitely BOWTIE boys, I think Jason too.... John Sr looked good in a suit, and Olivia always looked so elegant when she dressed up.... I remember how thrilled and priveledged i was, when my Grandma (Mom's mom) entrusted me with the honour of allowing me to take to school in either Grade 7 or 8 it was , for History class , a project I was doing on the 1920s, vGrandma's actual wedding dress she wore when she got married in 1922 or 1923 thereabouts. She was born in 1900 , so whatwver year it was, that was her age . The dress has discolured somewhat over the yrs at the time but pretty much else stayed in place. i deven brought some tattered baby shoes, a few other items. My teacher was impressed...i got i think it was A++ on the project Did anyone else enjoy the costumes the cast wore on the show ?!

Loved them. Especially Olivia. Like you said, she looked so elegant and beautiful. Her and John were a very attractive couple. And Grandma and Grandpa always looked brilliant. Whether for comedy value with some of Grandpas (thinking bathing suit when the preacher first came to town) or when they dressed up and looked so beautiful. Poor but respectable and always clean and smart. Loved their outfits.

Hi Jacki,
Interesting post. :-) I particularily liked the style of clothing worn by Mary Ellen and Erin in the last seasons. They looked very elegant. Olivia...looked lovely throughout the seasons, no matter what she wore. She was beautiful, willowy and elegant by nature and could carry anything off. I loved John looking "down home" in his working clothes, and I didn't care for him all dressed up in his citified togs. What a handsome man! :-)

Loved how the show stayed true for the times. Alot of Olivia's dresses were cut from the same pattern only made with different print fabric. That is the way my Grandmother's dresses were made, Grandma was born in 1910 and passed in 1994. My Grandfather was born the same year and died before Grandma, my Grandpa always wore overalls (except for dress up occassions). I will never forget Olivia's blue dress that she wore over and over again ~ that is the way it was back then. Nothing was ever wasted, after the dress or other item of clothing could not be worn by anyone it would be "recycled" in quilt squares. I have several quilts that my Grandma made and I would not trade them for all of the money in the world.

I do enjoy the costumes. I notice that John Boy never wears the plaids that the younger boys wear, especially Ben and Jason who are suited to them w/ red hair. they look fantastic and John Boy always wears light colored shirts which are very handsome on him. I agree that John Sr. is a VERY handsome man and looks best in the bathtub scene! But he looks great in the regular duds and not in that horrible suit he pulls out (poverty requiring) for fancy occasions or what he wears later as they come into a little more money.
Olivia's blue and white polka dot house dress is her prettiest of the house dresses. I always think that w/ her talent as a seamstress and how the girls as they got a little older dressed so nice even for school, that Olivia wouldn't have put a few more darts or shaping in her clothes. I'm not thrilled w/ the dress that John bought her for their 2nd wedding vows. I think they could have done a little bit better.
I love Grandpa in his overalls, Can't beat him. Grandma just looks so funny in those hats of hers and dresses, stockings and shoes. I LOVE her in the hat Livvy bought her to go to dinner with Mr. Danes I think it is. She looks beautiful.
the Baldwin Sisters, w/ their $ of course take the prize. Those outfits and hats are so elegant and tasteful. I'd so like to dress that way when I'm that age. Who cares about fashion, those styles were timeless.
Once in awhile I think guests dress a bit for the 70's when the show was filmed rather than their own time period like John-Boy's first love, Jenny. We called those Granny dresses in the 70's and wore them with boots as she did.
A slight departure pet peeve I have is with Michael Learned's make-up. The false eye-lashes and finely arched brows, etc, etc, after awhile she looks just like the actress from Bewitched. I'd rather see her less made up and truer to the times. Why bother w/ such accuracy in the clothing and then paint her up so unbelievably for her situation and religious beliefs for that matter. I know we're not supposed to see the false eyelashes, but they're very obvious.
Fun topic, thanks.

Hi hollygirl,
A pet peeve of mine is Olivia's hair! It did change alot from the first year...colour and style. Michael Learned looked lovely, but Olivia would never have coloured her hair as was so obvious as the seasons moved along.

hi Barby,
so true. Even in the specials she never goes grey when she certainly would be. And often there isn't a single hair out of place when she works herself to the bone all day. Did Ike carry a lot of hairspray? LOL Is hairspray Baptist approved? hehe

I thought Olivia looks good in her new green dress that John bought it for their 20th anniversary. I prefer that she looks better in blond hair than reddish hair from Season 1.

I too noticed Olivia's eyelashes and yes they are not true to the times. However, as I watch the shows which are to be a man's recollections. I just think in that case that John Boy also pictured his mother, especially, in the best light and if that meant us having to see false eyelashes so be it. I just watch the show for the stories and characters BUT I will say that I have noticed things like this and it doesn't bother me one bit. The 1st episode that was filmed but not shown 1st the one where John Boy kills the bear ~ Olivia wears this real nice dress to dinner that really looked out of place.

Hi Again hollygirl,
Isn't tv wonderful, lol...it works magic...and everything is perfection...if necessary, even if it's not believable. Olivia was the most "together" farm mama with 7 children that I've ever seen...but then again, what does a city girl know. lol No matter. I'm a huge "Olivia" fan...and willing to overlook her "perfections." :-)
Tracey...I agree with you that Olivia looked more attractive with her blonde hair, rather than the red hair, She looked younger, less dowdy, and prettier,..but the red hair and style...were probably much more on target for keeping it "real." :-)

Oh I know, I LOVE the show so these are just little things I notice having watched the shows a zillion times hehe. those details never get in my way of loving the show. I start to analyze characters flaws and virtues as portrayed. It's just part of the fun of it. I sometimes change my thoughts about a character after many viewings, like watching a favorite movie for the 3rd time. I see more in them. Not even sure if the writers intended what I'm seeing or not!

It seemed to me that in the later seasons that they slacked up somewhat on the wardrobe and dressed more like the 70's. One the episode where they went to the beach and Olivia had on shorts and a top with no sleeves is when I realize just what a good looking lady Micheal Learned is.

www.imdb.com/name/nm0635876/Just noticed that the woman who did a significant number of the Walton's episodes costuming, Patricia Norris, was nominated for many emmy's for other significant work she did. Pretty impressive list.
