I am reading the Mary McDonough book, "Lessons From the Mountain" and she often talks about not feeling pretty. She talks a lot about her poor body image, how she struggled to stay thin, how she did not like her hair, etc. Imagine that! She was always so cute as a child and so pretty as an adult! Hard to imagine how she struggled!
It made me think of the cast members and how they were all good looking in their own ways at different times. For example, one of my favorite moments when I though Mary Ellen was the prettiest was when she was standing in the water with the sun at her back and the college boy saw her and kissed her. She looked so lovely in that scene!
Do you have a favorite scene when you thought a cast member was really pretty or handsome?

Just to clarify, Richard as John-Boy was gorgeous always. But when he wore those gray slacks, whoa baby! I thought Mary Ellen was exceptionally pretty in that scene you mentioned and that Erin was quite lovely during the Chad era (though always pretty - I can't imagine her being insecure). I had a "How YOU doin'?" moment with Ben when he was a POW. He was looking very grown-up and handsome in that episode. I also thought Daddy was most dashing with a little gray at his temples and his blue eyes a-sparkling...

Olivia looks just great with her hair unconfined.
Unfortunately, this is only when she's sick or crippled or crazy.

When they were In their Sunday Best of course.
Somebody explain to me "Knickers" How did that become fashionable ? They seem to suggest they were cheaper.

Apparently knickers were worn by young boys back in the 1920s and 1930s. This article suggests that they were geared more toward elementary age boys, and by the time a boy was 18, he usually no longer wore knickers. I don't think knickers were necessarily cheaper. I think it's more likely that John Boy already had knickers, and they couldn't afford to buy him new pants. Since he was growing up, he obviously didn't want to wear knickers to the dance with Marcia, and he especially did not want to wear them when he went off to college.

I never saw a scene where Elizabeth's hair didn't look absolutely beautiful.

Ben was very handsome when he grew up, seasons 8 and 9. Elizabeth too, her freckles faded, and that long, ravishing red hair, wow! Although Elizabeth and Jim Bob were cute when they were just very little kids.
Mary Ellen was always a looker. Judy Norton is just a very attractive person, period.

Gosh where did my post about knickers go? Google knickers and that is what you get. I never thought that the cast was supper atractive. Anyone of them could be found at the local high school. But, that is what made the show more real. Actually, it was the guest stars that were some of the pretty people. If you were to try to make the show by modern standards and use the pretty people, the show would not be the same, in fact it would be a joke. Pretty people and hard times don't match. The closest moment to the pretty people would be Elizabeth and Drew (who was a pretty person) in the third movie.

Knickers was the shortened word for Knickerbockers and yes, younger boys would wear them. John Boy definitely wouldn't be wanting to head off to college in them because they would make him seem so young. All the other young men would have been wearing long trousers. In those days they would also have only had one pair of good, Sunday clothes so I guess that if John Boy had knickers as his good set of clothes then that would have been what he would have worn for best. We see Jason wearing knickers for best early on too. I guess the younger boys also did.

If you've seen the film Titanic -- no not the 1997 epic, but the more subtle 1953 film, there's a plot point about a European boy who is kept in short pants because his father won't recognize him as a man. However, he proves his courage in the final moments.

In The Fawn, it's a tough choice as to which is more beautiful, the fawn or Mary. Judy Norton looked/looks fantastic anytime she's wearing jeans. Not so much when she's formal. I did not like her wedding dress at all. Of course, I was very jealous at the time. Kami always looks adorable and much younger than her age. She's at her best around the early War episodes. My eyes most pop open in the episode where she and Jim-Bob are being naughty and peeking in on the nutty painter. She looks exquisite in those boyish overalls. Um....let me see....were there boys in The Waltons? I can't remember.

I was cast for a role where most of the time I was going to be on top of the world with only a blip of my role being seen wearing such dreadful rags. The Walnuts were cast for a role where hard times were going to be the norm. Why Waltons Mountain and Tara are no comparison. Now where did I leave my curtians? I got me some sewing to do.

LOL Scarlett...
Max, in case you've never seen her in person...When I was at the 40th reunion festivities in California, I saw Judy for the very first time and she literally took my breath away. She is easily the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.

The cast looked best when it still included Richard Thomas and Will Geer!
