Peggi, I am guilty of that one.
In my 47 years and 5 hospitalizations, I have only had 1 nurse who was a man. In a letter of praise to the team who care for me several years ago, I couldn't remember his name. He was the only "male nurse" on our floor. My thought is this: As things become seen on a regular basis, the practice of political incorrectness starts to deteriorate.

I have to say, Nickie, that we have a great of nurses that we work with, both genders. working with us. And it is a pleasure to work with each and every one of them, male or female!

Experienced this first hand and all I can say is, "I'm truly blessed because of it."
Back then, black people even had to have their own churches. That's about as bigoted and unchristian as anyone can get! The brings to to mind the episode The Fighter where the black minister enters a prizefight to won money to start a church. At the end John and the boys helped build it the Waltons were attending the first service in the framework that will become the church.

The episode "The Obstacle" where Mr. Pickett wouldn't hire John-Boy's recently handicapped friend-the guy in the wheelchair that came to visit & they made a ramp for. Yeah, that wouldn't fly today! What's shocking is the ADA (Disabilties Act) wasn't even around when that episode was written in the late 70's-let alone the 40's! Wasn't it not created until the 90's? Embarrassing!
Political incorrectness was kind of their thing!

Political incorrectness was kind of their thing! I think J.D. Pickett was really a kind hearted guy underneath the bullheaded pragmatism that ruled in the hearts and minds of many businessmen of their day. I think that those kind of men just needed to take a step down and try to change with the times.

I found this less than an hour ago...my mouth is still hanging open. Yes, I did watch it all. It's "You Can't Do That On Television" from 1987:

Was that really something that was on TV? Never seen that show. Pretty bad. Couldn't watch the whole thing.

Another sad part about it to me is that all of those children's parents allowed them to participate in that episode.

Yes, you are so correct, Kimberly! I thought the exact same thing while watching it!

The Pledge. The dean at Boatwright won't let Mary Ellen enter pre med because she is a woman. He reluctantly allows her in at the end. Also remember John didn't want Mary Ellen to become a doctor.

I think that show was on Nickelodeon. I believe I remember channel surfing and seeing it once or twice.

I used to watch You Can't Do That on Television as a kid, pretty much from the time we got cable until it went off. It was on Nickelodeon every day. It was what you'd call toilet humor, but generally pretty innocent and funny.
I haven't watched the clip posted (at work - shhhh LOL) and I don't remember an adoption episode. I may sneak a peek when nobody's looking.
I seem to remember it was produced in Canada; I may be wrong about that though.
EDIT: Just watched it; alot of silliness as usual but it was par for the time I think. Not a whole lot of sensitivity going on there.

Oh my Gosh... I used to watch that show every Saturday morning. I probably did watch that episode at the time it aired. I wish I could remember what I would have been thinking when I watched it. It sure is not very nice to see that episode now. Amazing what they aired in the early 80's.
