I've been watching off and on a marathon of The Mary Tyler Moore Show episodes. Just concluded: "Howard's Girl" from 1971. Mary Jackson (Emily Baldwin) plays the mother of someone Mary is dating.

Watching a movie called Chato's Land (1972) starring Charles Bronson. A posse is after him after he kills a sheriff--in self defense. One of the members of the posse is Ralph Waite (John Walton) as well as Victor French (Mr. Edwards from Little House). Was bummed to see Ralph take part in the rape of an Indian girl. He had quite a big role in this movie compared to the other members of the posse--lots of lines and close up shots. Jack Palance as well as James Whitmore are also in this movie with Palance being the leader of the posse. Charles Bronson is bad to the bone (like in most his movies) playing the part of a 1/2 Apache who picks off each member of the posse one by one. Unfortunately, it was not a happy ending for Ralph's character when Bronson catches up to him. Pic 2 is a hint of how he met his maker.

Does everyone remember Ralph Waite in the movie Cool Hand Luke starring Paul Newman and George Kennedy? It was on yesterday as part of TCM's 31 Days of Oscars movies line up. Ralph played an inmate named Alibi. At the beginning of the movie we get a "moon shot" of Ralph as he is stripped down and made to wear a long night shirt as part of his punishment heading into "the box" which in this county jail looked like an outhouse. Ironically, Morgan Woodward who plays Boone Walton is Boss Godfrey, Robert Donner (Yancy Tucker) is Boss Shorty and Charles Tyner who played the mean landlord who gave John Boy a job collecting rent for him is also a boss; Boss Higgins.

I have been watching I Love Lucy lately, and Helen Kleeb, who played Miss Mamie Baldwin, appeared on an episode as a secretary at MGM. On another episode, Ellen Corby, who played Esther, appeared as Miss Hannah, Lucy's high school drama teacher.

Watched a good movie yesterday called The Gorgeous Hussy (1936) starring a young Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore (Drew's grandfather) as Andrew Jackson and Beulah Bondi (Martha Corrine) as his wife, Rachel Jackson. Crawford portrays a very outspoken woman (for that time) and an innkeeper's daughter in which many politicians frequented including Andrew Jackson who was a friend of her father's. Robert Taylor also stars in this movie as her love interest, whom she marries as well as a very young James Stewart who has a minimal role. Beulah does a great job, as usual, in her role as Rachel Jackson. I enjoy any movie Lionel Barrymore stars in and to have Beulah Bondi act along side him is a real bonus.

Rewatching a movie called Lawman (1971) starring Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan and Lee J. Cobb. Ralph Waite plays Jack Dekker, one of the bad guys working for Lee J. Cobb who is a corrupt rancher and the corrupt marshall, Robert Ryan. Burt Lancaster, another marshall, enters the town in order to end the corruption. Robert Duvall also co-stars one of the cronies. Sheree North (Kramer's mom from Seinfeld) along with Richard Bull (Mr. Olsen fm Little House) who plays one of the townspeople and Richard Tyner (rent collector on The Waltons) the minister are also supporting cast members. Great movie worthy of watching multiple times.

Watching the 1949 version of Little Women starring June Allyson, Elizabeth Taylor, Janet Leigh, Margaret O'Brien and Peter Lawford. I've seen this several times but had forgotten that a young Ellen Corby plays the house maid in the New York boarding house Jo (June Allyson) stays at to live and work watching the children for her parents' friend, the boarding house owner. Ellen's part as Sophie is very small but she has such a high pitched lilting voice, it's opposite of Grandma Walton sound. This is my favorite version of all the Little Women movies.

Watching a movie called Penny Serenade (1941) starring Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, Edgar Buchanan and also Beulah Bondi. Beulah plays the administrator of an orphanage where Grant and Dunne adopt a baby girl. Beulah looks age appropriate in this role instead of playing an older woman. Cary Grant was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in this role but lost to Gary Cooper for his role in Sergeant York.

I will have to look for that. I love old movies. The last one I watched was Mr. Smith goes To Washington. Jimmy Stewart was so handsome and Beulah Bondi was also in that movie. She played Jimmy Stewart's mother.

The Sundance Channel is running Roots, one of the first-ever miniseries and a landmark. Ralph Waite plays a slave ship captain in the first or second episode. He's very good ... you'll hate him in this!

I've been watching episodes of I Love Lucy, and I noticed Peggy Rea, the actress who played Rose, appeared on a few episodes as one of the ladies in the club that Lucy and Ethel belonged to.
