Watched a good movie last night that I have never seen nor heard of before called "The Southerner" (1945). It stars Zachary Scott and Betty Field and Beulah Bondi as Granny Tucker. It is about the trials and tribulations of farm life. I enjoyed it very much and of course Beulah Bondi was terrific in it. She was only about 56 in this movie and so they used makeup to make her look older for the part of Granny. In the movie during the wedding scene, the men started singing the song "Rye Whiskey." Here is a nice version of that song....

Watching the movie "Billy Two Hats" (1974) starring Gregory Peck and Desi Arnaz, Jr. Along with them in the movie are 2 Walton guest stars: David Huddleston (A.J. Covington) as the saloon owner, Copeland and Sian Barbara Allen (Jenny Pendleton) as Ester Spencer (Desi's love interest). I found the trailer for it on youtube.

I was watching The Odd Couple II starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau on one of our local stations today and Ellen Geer was in it. She played Felix Unger's (Jack Lemmon) ex wife Frances.

Just caught the end of a Daniel Boone episode on INSP. The cable guide: "'Target Boone.' A widower (Will Geer) plans to hang Boone, whom he blames for his wife's drowning." IMDB.com says it was first aired 20 Nov. 1969.
An interesting thing about these showings is that every scene has a greenish cast to it: not only the outdoor scenes, but many, many of the sets have pale green walls. Unless this was an artistic decision, I suspect some color fading in the negatives. Lots of old Eastmancolor movies from the 1950s/1960s turned redder and redder down through the years. The greening must be a process involving different dyes.

Saw two Waltons actors in the third season episode of "The Rockford Files" entitled "The Trouble with Warren": Paul Jenkins (Professor Parks) and Tow Bower (Curtis Willard).

The DVD release of the 1957 film 12 Angry Men contains a special feature documentary, "Reasonable Doubt: The Making of 12 Angry Men.”
One of the talking-head commentators is Richard Thomas. He had recently been cast as Juror #8 in a stage production of the play.
(I couldn’t find the documentary posted to YouTube or Dailymotion, but you may be able to find the DVD at your public library.)

Can you imagine Ellen Corby in a movie with Jayne Mansfield? Just finished watching a movie called "Illegal" (1955) starring Edward G. Robinson as a District Attorney who turns to alcohol after sending an innocent man to prison. After landing in jail himself for drunk and disorderly conduct, he decides to become a defense attorney and defend another incarcerated man. Turns out, this man is connected to the city's crime boss. Ellen Corby plays the role of Miss Hinkel, one of Robinson's legal assistants. At one point in the movie, she is driving him to the courthouse and ends up in a "high speed" getaway from a thug who wants to prevent Robinson from getting to his destination. Awesome to see Grandma speeding around corners through town! Jayne Mansfield, by the way, plays a witness for the defense.

Watching a movie called The Shepherd of the Hills (1941) starring John Wayne, Betty Field and Harry Carey. The supporting cast is Beulah Bondi, Ward Bond (John Wayne's sidekick in many of his movies) as well as Margorie Main. It was John Wayne's first movie in Technicolor and the director, Henry Hathaway also directed many more of John Wayne's movies including True Grit. It's a good movie about folks living in the Ozark Mountains. It is available to watch on YouTube as well. Beulah Bondi, as always, does a tremendous job in her role. If I see her name included in a movie description, I make sure and watch it.

Scanning the listings, I find that Ellen Corby will be one of the guests on the Johnny Carson/Tonight Show re-run from the 1970s on Antenna TV, Sunday 5/29. It's at 10 p.m. here, but is repeated later on.

The video quality of the broadcast isn't the best, and my editing is imprecise, but perhaps you'll enjoy it. Don't wait too long to view it: these things get removed for various reasons.

e knight I watched this too the other night. Here are some tidbits:
The person that posted it on youtube got the air date wrong. It was 5/26/76 not 6/26/76. www.paleycenter.org/collection/item/?q=tonight+show+starring+johnny+carson&advanced=1&p=93&item=B:82119
Ellen had just won her third Emmy on Monday May 17th, 1976. She was to originally appear on the Tonight Show on Thursday May 20th but they did not do the show. She was rescheduled and this episode of the Tonight Show was on Wednesday May 26th. She mentioned that she used to travel with her mother. Her mother died on September 9th, 1963. Ellen said they were starting the 5th season on June 1st (Tuesday). Season 5 started airing on September 23rd, 1976. Ellen had her stroke less than six months after this appearance on Johnny Carson (stroke happened in November 1976). Her last episode of the 5th season was the 15th episode - "The Ferris Wheel." She is seen only briefly in the beginning of it. It originally aired on January 6th, 1977, less than two months after her stroke. She did not return to the Waltons until the last episode (which was the 22nd one) of season 6 "Grandma Comes Home", which aired on March 30th, 1978. As we all know, sadly, Will Geer passed away just 23 days (4/22/78) after the airing of that episode.
Ellen mentioned here on Johnny Carson that she wanted to do more traveling and revisit India. Since her stroke was just less than six months later, I don't think she ever got to do that.
