Mom worked shift work as a nurse so she didn't bake much but her specialty was matrimonial bars...yumm.
I'm like Nickie, I've never heard of matrimonial bars. Do you have the recipe and don't mind sharing it?

My cookbooks are packed but I think I know where so I will look and get back to you. They have a shortbread crust and a sweet walnut topping...

When I was growing up, we usually had dessert after dinner on Sunday but rarely any other day. It was usually pie or cake. We would go to church on Sunday nights, and on the way home, we always passed by my grandparents' house. We would beg our parents to stop and see "Mammaw and Pappaw" because our Mammaw always had ice cream in the freezer and cookies in the cookie jar.
Thinking back to my childhood, we didn't really ever have dessert much either. But both my grandmothers always had pies, cakes, cookies or such. My favorite of my paternal grandmother was her fried apple pies and my maternal grandmother was her homemade from scratch chocolate cake.
Favorite of my late mother-in-law - her homemade banana pudding, caramel cake and fried apple pies.
Favorite of my momma - chess cake and strawberry pie.

Looking back we had dessert right after supper...often it was just canned fruit. Sometimes my dad would bake a lemon meringue pie or my brother baked banana bread. My specialty was sugar cookies or something on my easybake oven . Did you have one? Mom worked shift work as a nurse so she didn't bake much but her specialty was matrimonial bars...yumm. Anyhow, I still like something sweet after supper but now we wait a while and have it with a cup of herbed tea. Hmmm...now I want something.... Let's bake the banana bread and matrimonial bars together! Get the recipes and come visit! I tried the banana bread recipe but I don't think I got it right. I need your experienced touch! Note to self...buy extra banana and let them get nice and ripe. What is your favorite tea? I'll put the kettle on!

I make strawberry-rhubarb pie. Is your strawberry pie the kind with a sweet glaze on top?

Did you ever notice that The Waltons had dessert after every supper? We rarely cook dessert in my house. Supper usually fills us up. Do you have dessert all of the time? What is your favorite dessert. I like warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream...yummy! See what you started! We hear the word dessert and ....... !

One of my earliest memories of Christmas was a gift from Santa, it was an easy bake over. I remember using it a few times, but I don't think I got any refills. LOL

We had ice cream most days after dinner. We never had pies or such, my mom never baked anything in her life. The ice cream was good Sometimes we'd have Jell-O pudding too.

Matrimonial bars: You go to a club on Saturday night with the sole purpose of finding a husband.
