"The children are outside catching lightning bugs." Olivia "Is it that time of year again?" John
Are fireflies (aka lightning bugs) out in your area?
It is early June in New Jersey and no lighting bugs yet! Looking but have not seen any so far.

I saw lightning bugs one night last week in WV.
We had friends from England who visited us 15 years ago, June 2000. It was their first time in the U.S. We went to the airport to pick them up, and by the time we got home, it was nearly dark, and lightning bugs were lighting up all over our yard. They kept pointing and asking, "What is that?" They had never seen lightning bugs before!

Don't think I've ever lightning bugs down here, probably due to all the mosquito spraying trucks and low flying planes which go through here periodically
Sometimes can go to the National Sacred Harp convention which will be in Birmingham AL next week. There's a BBQ that takes place at a singer's house each year in Hoover. Along with singers, lightning bugs are usually guests as well.

Was sitting outside last night and there they were! I read that it has to be hot and humid for fireflies to be out. We have plenty of that!

I don't mind June Bugs but not a fan of when they land, bang into, and crawl on me. Nothing like coming inside and a while later feeling something crawling on your hair or neck! I don't like Strawberry Flies. They buzz round and round your head and will draw blood when they bite. They look like little gray and black triangles. Then there is their GIANT cousins, the Green Head Horse Fly!! They will eat you alive and stay on you even if you go under water! They are common in marshy areas by the ocean. And the Jersey mosquitoes! Have been know to make grown men cry! Going to try Avon's Skin So Soft this year. People swear by it for all kinds of bugs.

I owe my bad shoulder to a horse fly.

I purchase fly predators to release around the barn and pasture. They invade fly larvae and insert their own egg in there instead. The predators are not harmful to people or horses...only flies. One fly predator can wipe out 70 fly eggs. I get them 5,000 or 10,000 at a time. I just got a shipment yesterday I have to release.
