This is a very difficult post to write. My husband injured his leg in a freakish yard accident with the metal culvert in our ditch on October 14. We initially thought it would be no problem to recover from, but his leg worsened from the wound earlier this week and we began to get a bit nervous about his recovery and traveling across the country. He further worsened last night and we spent four hours in the ER today. He now has a very serious infection in his leg that has to be monitored very closely for a while by doctors to make sure the infection doesn't spread any further. I am feeling so sad after all the planning and excitement of attending our very first Virginia reunion. I will miss terribly not being with you all, as I was looking forward to meeting so many of you from the forum. Have a wonderful time together, everyone, and know that I will be there with you in spirit. *I am hoping someone on Carolyn's waiting list might be able to use our banquet/hotel reservations, and am waiting to hear word back from her before I cancel out at the hotel. Oh, Jan, I am so sorry to hear that you won't be there this year. I know how disappointing it is when you have your heart set on something. We will all miss you very much! Infections are nothing to mess with and being far from home would not be a good idea. Will pray for your husband's speedy recovery.

A couple of questions, Jan, and I hope I'm not being too personal... Where on his leg did this happen, and is it sort of a long slash ? He is not diabetic, is he ?
I'm sure he'll be okay, but it's looking like a long road.... all good wishes for both of you. I just KNOW he'll be recovering nicely for Thanksgiving Jeri..... No it's not personal at all. I just didn't want to bore anyone with details here. Amazingly, my hubby never sustained a cut on his leg at all, and he isn't diabetic. Due to the force he hit the culvert he developed a goose-egg size Hematoma (through heavy jeans) on his lower right leg, between the inside of his knee and ankle bone. (A Hematoma is localized swelling that is filled with blood caused by a break in the wall of blood vessels.) His orthopedic doctor tried to drain what he could of the collected blood a week ago today but he never got any better.....just worse. Normally, these things will eventually reabsorb themselves into the body, but his is so bad and won't respond to treatment that he needs surgery. The doc suspects he may have infection under the Hematoma as well, even though they put him on an antibiotic. Over the weekend he developed Cellulitis (a quickly spreading skin infection) in and all around the Hematoma, so I took him to the ER Saturday morning and he was put on a more powerful antibiotic. On Wednesday the doc will open up the Hematoma, clean it out, and then we work at getting him better. He is beating himself up for ruining our trip but no one could have ever imagined this mishap could have led to this chain of events. I keep going back to that one word.....freakish. Heavens -- what an ordeal.... have never heard of such a thing, and I'm sure you hadn't either.... this has got to be very tough to go through -- frightening.... I'll be thinking of you every minute until you tell us the worst is over -- SOON
Take care, Jeri

Wow Jan, I can't believe all this, and he never even broke the skin...how frustrating for you both. Please let him know, he has many forum members rooting for him, and wishing him a speedy recovery. Prayers to Both of you, and please keep us updated.

What began as a "freakish" yard accident two weeks ago tomorrow has now progressed into leg surgery for my husband early this Wednesday morning. I can hardly wrap my mind around such a bizarre happening leading to surgery. My husband had a very difficult weekend with a trip to the ER on Saturday. His orthopedic surgeon took one look at his leg this morning and recommended getting him into surgery ASAP. The poor guy is in so much pain and can barely walk. He will hopefully be back on the road to recovery very soon. So, this trip to Virginia was certainly not meant to be this year. I (sniff, sniff ) cancelled our reservations at the Kirkley Hotel this afternoon. Now, I will anxiously look forward to all the wonderful reports from those of you who will be posting. My blessings go with you, my Walton friends. I know this will be the most wonderful reunion ever!
How did your husband's surgery go? Is he feeling any better?

How did your husband's surgery go? Is he feeling any better?
Thank you for asking. Roger got through surgery this morning just fine and the doctor got that large blood clot out of his leg, thankfully. He's on some heavy duty pain meds right now so has been pretty comfortable (and woozy) most of the day. He has been walking much better, which is a very good sign, so we'll see if it continues. I have a feeling the effects of the surgery may catch up with him more tomorrow. He's got a lot of healing ahead, but at least he's on the road to recovery. No more of these bizarre slips! BTW, if you get a chance to talk to Carolyn this weekend could you perhaps tell her Roger ended up having to undergo surgery? When I talked to her last Saturday she was going to pray for him and was so optimistic that we were going to make it to Virginia. She gave me such a wonderful, upbeat pep talk, bless her. I messaged her on Facebook Monday to tell her it had escalated to surgery, but I think she has a few more important things on her mind these days. I am sure going to miss not meeting you! Well, get that excitement going at your home! You are about ready to head out soon! Safe travels to you and Mr. Forever and enjoy your weekend to the fullest! Warm Walton wishes, Jan Wonderful news, Jan! Praying for an uneventful and complete recovery! Hope this is soon a distant memory for you both.

You had me worried because you "liked" me asking about your husband's surgery but you hadn't let us know how it went. I was so glad when a few hours later, I logged back on and read the above message. Wonderful that surgery went well.

Oh, my goodness!! I was nearly left speechless today. What a touching surprise my husband brought in from our mailbox today. Thank you to ALL the forum members attending the reunion that signed a get well card and sent notes to my husband, Roger, after a last minute yard accident kept us home from Virginia this year. And....to have autographs from Michael Learned, Cissy Wellman, and our dear Miss Carolyn Grinnell on the card.....well, that was really extra special! I know I shrieked, "Michael Learned even signed the card!" Now, ForeverWaltons, aka Kimberly, I know you are the "organizer-in-chief" and orchestrated all of this, and we both thank you from the bottom of our hearts. None of you here on the forum have even met the two of us in person before, but you were all so kind to remember Roger and myself after his accident and the great disappointment of not being able to attend the 2014 reunion as planned. Thank you, and much love to all of you from both of us. Roger continues to slowly but steadily progress with the healing of his leg following surgery last Wednesday. For that I am truly grateful. With warm Walton gratitude, Jan and Roger
The mail system is so strange. I mailed you my card from Alabama last Monday (10/27) and you did not receive it until Friday (10/31) - 4 mail days. I dropped that card from all of us in the mail at Schuyler on Saturday (11/01) after the post office was closed for the day and you received it today (11/04) - 2 mail days. I'm tickled that you received it so quickly. Did you notice the postmark on it? I dropped a Walton's postcard to myself just for the postmark - Schuyler VA 22969 Walton's Mountain and I received it today.
Those two little green sticky notes that I put on the inside of the card was just to draw your attention to the fact that even Michael and Cissy had signed the card, you can take those off if you haven't already. Wonderful to hear that Roger is doing better.

The card I received today from you was postmarked from Richmond, VA, not Schuyler. I wonder why yours was Schuyler and this one wasn't? Yes, I noticed your little green sticky notes right away. My eyes went right to them and I did a double take at first! No, I didn't try to take them off just in case they might peel the paper away, but I can try it. I can't begin to tell you how much we both love this card. It is truly one of the most special cards we have ever received. I feel so fortunate to be part of a forum that has such wonderful and caring Walton fans.
Bummer! I wonder why it wasn't postmarked Schuyler VA 22969 Walton's Mountain like mine was. I mailed them at the same place and time. You can take the green sticky paper off, it will not peel the paper. It's that post it note paper.

The U.S.mail is downright unpredictable. I have noticed at times it will move faster over the weekend, just like your second card did. I have mailed cards to my brother 1,400 miles away in Idaho on a Friday and he has received it by Monday. The card I received today from you was postmarked from Richmond, VA, not Schuyler. I wonder why yours was Schuyler and this one wasn't? Yes, I noticed your little green sticky notes right away. My eyes went right to them and I did a double take at first! Bummer that the card was postmarked in Richmond. ForeverWaltons went to such lengths to have it postmarked in Schuyler. She is such a 'good egg'. LOL
