I was just reading in Lessons from the Mountain that they didn't expect to be cancelled because Season 9 had seen an increase in ratings. Then they weren't even told directly that it was cancelled - the news was just announced in a newspaper! Shockingly disrespectful to the actors, I think. As much as I can see why a lot of people don't like Season 9, I'm quite a fan of it. The Victims, The Pearls, The Beginning, The Gold Watch and The Move are just a few of the excellent episodes from that season. I like that they consciously tried to adjust the tone of the show as it went on - if they had tried to make Season 9 like Season 1, I think that would have been pretty bad.

Because of what people have said on this forum, I am somewhat hesitant in watching Season 9, especially with the whole "Curt revival" episode. If a show has overstayed its welcome to the point where the writers aren't as ambitious, it is obvious that the episode plots are not going to be as strong as they used to or even plots get reused.

Think of it as a dream. I always do, and the fact that the resurrected Curt doesn't look anything like the old Curt make it easier to pretend.

It also helps that the reunion movies in the 90s tend to ignore it. There's a conversation between Mary Ellen and Jim Bob where they talk about Curt and act like he died at Pearl Harbour. Also, the Season 8 episode The Medal has someone who knew Curt give an account of his actions on the day of the attack which in no way lines up with "Curt" saying he wasn't even at the base on the time in Season 9. It doesn't line up with what came before or after, so I just choose to ignore it as well.

I wouldn’t let what others have said discourage me from watching Season 9 if I were you. I recommend you watch and form your own opinions. You might find you actually enjoy some of the episodes, and then when “The Revel” comes on, you can think, “Season 1 starts over tomorrow!”

I remember when some of mum's friends from church were joking about soap operas that they watched and how dead is not necessarily dead. TV writers have a way of finding creative loopholes to bring back the dearly departed. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brought back Sherlock Holmes after it seemed like he died.
