Maybe I didn't take a close enough look at that website about the fall foliage ... but the one relevant thing I saw was that West Virginia is expected to peak in late September.... wouldn't Virginia be similar -- hence, pretty much over by mid-October ??

It's around 1,100 miles from our home to Lynchburg. We are going to take our time driving and stretch it out over three days. We used to drive 500+ miles per day when we were younger, but not anymore. I love the glorious days of fall and enjoy being out on the road taking our time. I do hope to see some fall beauty because I purchased a new camera for the trip and want to put it to good use! I know it varies from year to year in all areas of the country, but what has the fall color been like for the most part during reunion days in Virginia when you have attended?
I started a thread about the fall foliage peak viewing times in the United States this year:
waltonswebpage.proboards.com/thread/6073/viewing-times-foliage-united-states#.VCLkJod0yM8
Click on the website listed in my post for that info. There was plenty of fall foliage last year in Virginia when I attended. The other reunion I attended was in California (2012) - mostly asphalt, people and buildings. LOL!
Thanks so much for the link, ForeverWaltons! Every year is definitely not the same. We've had so much rain here in Iowa all spring, summer, and fall, which may impact our foliage one way or the other this year. After we first retired, we used to go to Branson, MO the last weekend of October/first part of November each year. The foliage was gorgeous some years; other years it was past peak. We can just hope Virginia has some color left for all to enjoy that weekend!

Hi, Jeri! I looked at the map, too, and do see West Virginia is yellow for the September peak. Perhaps they have some different types of trees there that peak earlier? Just a guess, but Brenda might know. I think it looks like Virginia is tri-colored in the reds from west to east, so earlier to later peak in October as you move toward the coast. Well, we'll have a great time no matter what! (Wish you could be there, Jeri. Hope to meet you sometime.)

Before we had children, Mr. Forever and I went to Mansfield, Springfield and Branson Missouri the last week of October 1992. We went to Laura Ingalls Wilder's house and museum. We also visited the cemetery that Laura, Almonzo and Rose are buried in. We stayed at Bass Pro Shops Cedar Lodge in Springfield (in the honeymoon cabin), went to Silver Dollar City and saw Ray Stevens in Branson. It was absolutely gorgeous with fall foliage at that time.

Well, my best wishes to all at the reunion. Greetings to Michael and Cissy from my family and me. Of course, we are unable to attend. Traveling to VA from Ecuador is a bit much for a weekend. Hope everyone has a wonderful time.

The leaves have been turning early in NY. The Adirondacks are peak next week, from what I have heard. Usually peak is in October sometime.

I made reservations for us yesterday at a Best Western in Covington, Virginia, which is about 90 miles from Lynchburg. I asked the lady how the fall leaves were doing there. She said there was no color change yet but would expect it to be quite colorful around the time we were there.

Not much in south/eastern NY yet.... we usually peak about mid Oct., I think ?! According to my mom and her mom, it can be quite different within even as little as 50 miles.... something to do with the immediate area's rainfall, early brief cold temp, type of foliage, etc., etc.... wish it were easier to predict -- makes travel plans very difficult !! ... every year, I drive myself crazy with this -- I keep trying to figure it out but never will

Yes, we will be driving again this year. If we stop for bathroom breaks, lunch, gas and there is no major traffic problems, then it takes between 8 and 9 hours.

We are leaving home two weeks from this Tuesday and I am getting so excited to be a part of this wonderful reunion for the very first time! I am looking forward to leaving the Midwest (flat land, corn and soybeans!) for a while and head for the mountains again! I LOVE the mountains in the east. I have our trip routed out and motels booked. I was bound to get us up on the Blue Ridge Parkway for part of the trip and got the access/exit points figured out yesterday. It's been years since I've driven the parkway and remember the beauty so well. I couldn't help but be reminded of one of my favorite episodes, "The Conflict," when this parkway was being built and Martha Corrine and her family were being displaced. I read an informative but rather sad article online yesterday of the distress all the mountain families experienced so America can enjoy this beautiful parkway today. See you all soon!
