"These things" are more likely to happen when an all-powerful government controls the country with no checks and balances. It's why we should cherish the freedom we have in this country and do everything we can to maintain and defend it. And be ever-vigilant for abuse. My great grandparents had no way to defend themselves--not with the vote and not with a deadly weapon. It's why my grandmother sailed 3,000 miles at the age of 16 to an uncertain future. Because freedom meant more to her than anything else. I am sure the same can be said of many others who emigrated here. Because of her and my other grandparents, that freedom is now my birthright. And I never take it for granted. You are so right! We can never take what we have for granted. A friend of mine told me the story of how her grandmother came to this country. The family had an infant daughter and could not afford the passage to America. The mother gave her baby to her sister who was coming to America so the baby could have a better life. Imagine that! My great grandfather came to this country because he said no one was going to tell him what he could and could not do! I'm quite sure I would have liked your great grandfather, Kathy Lee.

Sure wish I was going but alas it is too far! Hi! How are you? I have not heard from you in a while. I am guessing work, house, and retirement has you busy. Hope all is well. Hugs!

When you go to Schuyler, just across the road from Earl Hamner's boyhood home is the Schuyler Post Office.
Where the Post Office now sets was the Hamner family's cow pasture. Earl Hamner said, "In the middle of the cow pasture, there used to be the most beautiful old crab apple tree, I used to love seeing the seasons change as the crab apple tree changed."
I have walked the land in the footsteps of all my fathers, back in time to where the first one trod, and stopped, saw sky, felt wind, bent to touch mother earth, and called this home, this mountain, this pine and hemlock, oak and poplar, laurel wild and rhododendron, home and mountain. Father, mother, grow too, the sons and daughters, to walk the old paths, to look back in pride, in honored heritage, to hear its laughter and its song, to grow to stand and be, themselves, one day remembered. I have walked the land in the footsteps of all my fathers. I saw yesterday, and now look to tomorrow. Earl Hamner Jr.

I always wondered how they kept a cow on the small lot where the Hamner house is. The last time we were in Schuyler, my granddaughter was playing on the school's playground equipment. I wonder how old the equipment is and if the Hamner children played on the swings and slide. Also, do you know the history of the house across the street from the Hamner house? The one that used to keep the goats? When we were there in the spring the house was empty. It looks like it was a really nice house in its day.

Should I be concerned I haven't received a confirmation yet?

Should I be concerned I haven't received a confirmation yet?
I emailed Carolyn Grinnell @ thewaltonsinternationalfanclub@gmail.com to inquire that my check had been received and cashed by her, for the first one I attended in California (2012). I was super excited and it was such a long journey from Alabama to California, I had to make sure that I did indeed have a spot reserved upon my arrival. For my second reunion last year in Virginia, I don't recall receiving a confirmation. I just waited for the check to clear my account.
This year I mailed my check on Tuesday August 12th and it cleared my account on Thursday September 4th. That's 23 days start to finish. I don't know how often Carolyn goes to the post office to get the fan club mail nor how long she waits to cash the checks as they come in. She did say that all money had to be received by October 6th because she had obligations to The Kirkley Hotel.

Well, I guess it's better late than never to post since I've had to be off the forum for a while. I am attending the reunion as I have mentioned several times before. I am Jan and I go by my real name here on the forum. My husband is Roger and we are making the drive to Virginia from our home near Des Moines, Iowa. We will be staying at the Kirkley Hotel. We're both "forever" Walton's fans and are really looking forward to being with you all for the very first time!!

Thanks for the info. Will ask my husband to see if the check cleared. If not we will be reunion crashers!

It's around 1,100 miles from our home to Lynchburg. We are going to take our time driving and stretch it out over three days. We used to drive 500+ miles per day when we were younger, but not anymore. I love the glorious days of fall and enjoy being out on the road taking our time. I do hope to see some fall beauty because I purchased a new camera for the trip and want to put it to good use! I know it varies from year to year in all areas of the country, but what has the fall color been like for the most part during reunion days in Virginia when you have attended?

I started a thread about the fall foliage peak viewing times in the United States this year:
waltonswebpage.proboards.com/thread/6073/viewing-times-foliage-united-states#.VCLkJod0yM8
Click on the website listed in my post for that info. There was plenty of fall foliage last year in Virginia when I attended. The other reunion I attended was in California (2012) - mostly asphalt, people and buildings. LOL!
