Can anyone tell me which episode it was that Grandpa said something that started with, "No man can own a mountain...?" I know he said it in the Homecoming when John boy asked him if they had something that showed they owned Waltons Mountain. Grandpa answered that you can't own a mountain, etc, etc. But was there an episode where Will Geer said something similar about the mountain? And if so, does anyone know which episode it was?

I have to check, but off the top of my head, I believe it was the episode called "The Deed". I might be wrong though..

That is what I'm thinking. The Deed. That quote would fit the episode. If I remember Will Geer said it pretty much the same as Edgar Bergan did in The Homecoming.
"You can't own a mountain any more than you can own an ocean or a piece of the sky. You hold it in trust. You live on it, you take life from it, and once you're dead, you rest in it."

Thanks everyone. I just now watched the entire episode, The Deed. Grandpa didn't say it in that episode. He and John Boy were walking up on the mountain and they had a conversation just before they saw the land surveyors, but it wasn't the quote I was looking for. I hadn't watched that episode for awhile, though, and I really enjoyed it. I especially liked how Mary Ellen, who could so often be whiny and bratty, showed that she had a sensitive side and she really cared about her family by selling her antique and giving John the $25.
I am looking for this quote for someone else. I'm not even sure it is in any other episode besides The Homecoming, but this person is almost sure she heard it said by Will Geer in one of the episodes.

I Googled it (you probably did too...) and The Homecoming is the only thing that came up.... I bet Grandpa voiced quite similar notions quite a few times.... I'll try googling snippets of the quote when I get a moment.

Looks like Jeri and I have been doing the same thing. I could only come up with it being on The Homecoming spoken by Edgar Bergen. You can drag your mouse to go to the time mark of 30:20 to see it. It ends at 30:42
Other wisdom spoken by grandpa Zebulon (Will Geer) is from The Deed as others have mentioned here on this post. Plus I found this one from The Sermon Season 4:
There was also wisdom spoken by him on The Waltons' Christmas Album (scroll down a little and underneath the video, they have written out what he spoke):
While researching this I came across this interesting article from January 2014:

Thanks Jeri and Kimberly. I spent a lot of time googling before I came here to ask the question. I'm beginning to think it was only in The Homecoming. Those videos had a lot of good quotes, though. Thanks for posting them.

I'm almost positive he said it in an episode. Hmmm, I may have to do a Waltons marathon... Thanks Brenda!

I'm pretty sure I remember Will Geer saying that same line in an episode. I also remember thinking "Hey that was in The Homecoming!"

If it's not in The Deed, my second bet would be The Conflict

Somewhere back in my posting history I asked this very same question and someone did answer, only I can't remember who answered or what episode it was in. But I do remember that it was quoted pretty much word for word, and it was Grandpa saying it like Edgar Bergen did in The Homecoming. It's out there somewhere, we just need to find it , easier said than done.

Cat you started your thread back in December 2011 with the subject line, "The Conversation between John Boy and Grandpa". Here's the link:

Brenda has established that it was not the episode, "The Deed" by recently viewing it. Your thread gives another lead though, maybe it is "The Heritage" Season 2 Ep. 17 - John considers a developer's offer to sell Walton's Mountain. This is the episode that nearly at the end of it has John Sr. and Olivia finding John Boy watching Jim Bob and Elizabeth sleeping. John Boy gives his speech about what all these two youngest Walton children would miss out on if their daddy was to sell out.
I think it is most likely "The Cloudburst" Season 5 Ep. 8 - Will John Boy sell his land on the mountain, given to him by grandpa, to keep the Blue Ridge Chronicle publishing? John Boy does sell his meadow and then tries to get it back. Later in the episode John Boy is talking to grandpa about losing the piece of land that he had given him. This is were grandpa probably told him the no one can own the mountain/land speech (that Edgar Bergen originally said in the homecoming) to reassure him that it was okay.
