I'm pretty sure this has been a topic before, but I'll do a repeat because it just bothers me. I was watching a few episodes last night..
The Walton's are a huge family, and are always struggling. They call the kids down for breakfast, and seconds later, rush them off to school, without eating, washing their faces, or brushing their teeth. I guess it would have taken too long to make them all go do those things, but why show them wasting so much food?

I am going on the assumption that as soon as they left, whatever food left was saved and later, made into a dinner casserole and served with biscuits and salad!

I remember when I was a kid, most parents made their children "clean their plates" -- sometimes not letting them get up from the table until they were finished -- remarks about the starving children somewhere or other.... Of course, decades later child psychologists and dieticians informed us that was the worse thing to do !! But it drives me crazy that these days families seldom eat together and, when they do, the moms may well end up making different foods at the same mealtime for different kids.... that can't be good !!

The real answer to that question is that it took hours to film those scenes and they had to make sure they had the same amount of food on the plate in case they had to do multiple retakes for continuity. The food would be cold and spoiled by the end of the shoot.
Mary McDonough talked about this in her book LESSONS FROM THE MOUNTAIN.

I realize that the food was cold and stuff and not that tasty for the actors, but if these people are supposed to be a poor family, they sure waste a lot of food. They were called down for breakfast, and then rushed out the door. I'm sure the actors were ok with it! Lol
Jeri, that is one thing my mom hates as well. I grew up always eating supper with my family. Still to this day, we eat all together every night. I work afternonn shift, so I'm not there, but if I was home, that's where I would be for supper. It's a very normal thing to eat together, and funny that everyone has their spot. If I sit somewhere different, I feel weird, and out of place.

Maybe they used the leftover food to slop the hogs - or maybe they tossed it to Reckless. I don't think there was any Alpo in those days. The hand washing definitely needed some work though!

Nice that your family sits down for dinner Many families including ours don't do that on a regular basis except the holidays

In my house growing up I ate what mom put on the table or I went hungry until the next meal. It was rare that I didn't eat what she cooked. Only when she made Manwich, the sloppy joe sauce in a can, which to this day I can't stand would she allow me to pick out a TV dinner or can of Spaghetti O's or if I was sick she would make me a can of chicken soup otherwise I ate what was on the table or nothing.

I am just like carol, I grew up eating what my mom put on the table or did without. The only exception was if I was sick. My mom always made her meatloaf & hamburgers with crushed up crackers added to the meat to make it go further. When my husband & I was dating he told me that when we got married that I better never ever add crackers to the hamburger meat & I never have. Mom never made spaghetti or lasagna because daddy did not like it. My mom also made meatloaf & fried salmon patties at least once a week. I ate it because I was hungry, but I told myself that when I got out on my own I would never eat meatloaf or fried salmon patties again & I haven't nor have I ever made either one of those. Sometimes when I drop over at my best friend's house she is frying salmon patties - ugh! Just the smell! LOL! My husband & I plus our 6 kids still at home always sit down to supper together. No TV on - just the radio playing softly in the background so we can all talk to each other as we eat.

Aw, Kimberly! You're mentioning the things my mom made and I liked! My mom was a meatloaf gal too, but I thought crackers or bread crumbs were suppose to be added to it! She never did that with hamburgers, but to the salmon patties - she did. (she fixed it just like meatloaf) All the things my mother made for dinner - I make. I promise, If you're ever at my table for a meal, Kimberly... I will not serve anything with crushed up crackers.
If we didn't like what Mom was making, we had the option of making a pb&j sandwich for ourselves, but that was it. I never did care for Mom's "goulash"! That was definately a sandwich night!

I think bread crumbs or cracker crumbs are added to meatloaf as a binding agent, not to stretch it.... even "gourmet" meatloaf recipes call for crumbs....
I still love meatloaf, whether hot (NO gravy, please, as diners prepare) or next day cold sandwiches....
And, my mom made "salmon loaf" too. There were a few of mom's recipes we always said we'd never make... but, then, years later found ourselves craving those meals and reverted back to an occasional "Mom Recipe"... after Mom died, and Dad lived on for another 12 years, I would occasionally make one of her "specialties!" for him as a special meal !!

My mother cooked a lot of pinto beans, and she made cornbread every day. Her cornbread wasn't baked, it was fried in a black skillet, usually with bacon grease. She still makes it occasionally. She would take the left over cornbread and put it in a glass of milk and eat it for a night time snack. She also made meat loaf and salmon patties sometimes. She used uncooked oatmeal, not crackers or bread crumbs, in her meat loaf. I always liked her beans, meat loaf, and salmon patties, but she cooked a lot of things I didn't like (I'm a picky eater), and like many of you, if I didn't like it, I went hungry, because she didn't cook a separate meal for everyone. To this day, I still like beans and meat loaf, but I can't even stand the smell of salmon patties. I can't believe I ate them all the time as a kid. I guess I didn't want to go hungry.

Now there is a lot of my mom's cooking that I still love. She makes great pinto beans with ham, chess cake, turkey & dressing, biscuit bread with cracklings, etc. I refused to eat her boiled cabbage though. It stunk up the whole house & then some! I also love seafood but I am like you Brenda I can't stand the smell of salmon patties but I definitely ate my share growing up because I was hungry.

Nickie - You didn't say that you wouldn't serve me fried salmon patties. Please noooo!! Just give me crushed up crackers in a glass of white milk. Now that I love - just not in my hamburger meat.
