I wonder what they did with the new house on the mountain. They probably rented it out or turned it into a bed and breakfast. Speaking of the fairly recent phenomenon called a "bed and breakfast" -- we had tried many of those... and eventually gave up with the idea.... most of the time, we felt spied on by the owners, uncomfortable just sitting in the "living room".... constantly afraid we might unwittingly make some "wrong move".... along with lots of insincere, cheesy smiles.... much better to find an old country inn with an actual restaurant and a welcomed feeling of privacy. My husband & I have stayed in two B&B's. Both in 1992 when we went to Missouri. This was before we had any kids & we always traveled off season for better rates & less crowds. The first B&B was in Mansfield just right down the road from Laura Ingalls Wilder's house. It was a huge house & looking at the guest book was usually always booked solid. It had at least 5 bedrooms, the owners did not live in it instead they had a hired couple to oversee it (they lived in a camper at the end of the driveway) & to come in mornings & prepare breakfast for guests. They told us to make ourselves at home because we had the whole house to ourselves. It was the last week of October & we made a fire in the living room fireplace & made love in front of it!! So obviously we did not feel spied upon. But when we went on up to Branson, we didn't feel too comfortable in that B&B. Everywhere we went...kitchen, living room, outside...there was always someone around. No privacy at all it seemed. So one really GREAT experience & one not so great.

As far as a B&B is concerned, I have never tried one out myself. Some people back in the 30's set up those kind of places just to make a living, but back then people did just about just to survive. When I think about it, I'm sure that John and Olivia probably rented the place or let their families live in it.
