Hatton Ferry is the site of one of the last two remaining poled ferries in the United States. It is located near Scottsville, VA. In September 1973 Richard Thomas assisted in the dedication of the reopening of the ferry after it was destroyed in 1972. When Richard Thomas was leaving, his arm somehow got entangled in the purse of one of my friends, Gail Hall. She was pulled by Richard several feet before she was able to get his attention. When Richard realized what was happening, he politely apologized to Gail and lightly hugged her. Gail and I enjoyed talking about her brief encounter with John Boy over the years. I'm sad to say that my friend, Gail, passed away yesterday after a two year battle with leukemia. Whenever I watch The Waltons, I know that Gail will be watching with me. Gail, I miss you.
