So was Reckless male or female?? Seems in the earlier episodes reckless was male, but then in a later episode she gave birth to one pup.
Reminds me of MASH when Hawkeye is talking about his Mother and Sister in earlier shows and then later describes how he and his Dad use to have pancakes together when he was young, after his Mother died.

I recently watch Bonanza and a friend's of Hoss bought this beautifull black mare and was anxious to get her bred for a pretty colt out of her.
Hoss's friend is leading her in a corral and that horse was a Gelding !!! Not A mare* I have my own horse's and there's no mistaking a mare from a gelding ( or Stud ).
I guess the movie producer's don't think we can "SEE" what their true identity is.

Hawkeye was from Crabapple Cove, Maine. Thats what we always remember. I think sometimes shows start out with a place or idea about something but once they figure out with what they're comfortable with they go with that like Hawkeye from Crabapple Cove Maine. Remember the one with the sneezing allergy attack where he remembered a powerful childhood memory and cried. What a scene. Also the one where he got letters from children there and the camp wrote back Great episodes. I think I like MASH second best to the Waltons both starting in 1972 ironically. Best wishes waltonsportwriter Also in the early episodes of MASH, Hawkeye hailed from Vermont, instead of Crabapple Cove, Maine......

I've often wondered why they changed the sex of Reckless in the series.

It seems like Reckless's gender changed to suit the storyline. Yes Yancy's dog Tiger was the daddy of Reckless's pup.

Reckless seems to infer a male dog, yet before you yell..I am thinking back in 1972..before we were politically correct.lol

The truth is, the Waltons got 'Reckless' when a stray dog showed up at their house and the kids fed it. What they didn't realise was that there were actually two identical dogs wandering around outside the house, one male, one female, but whenever they saw either one they thought it was the one dog 'Reckless'. Eventually the two dogs bred and had a baby and Yancy incorrectly thought Tiger was the father.

Is it possible there were more than one "Reckless"? Maybe they had a dog of one gender and then replaced him/her with a dog of a different gender? In any case, I thought the episode when Reckless dies was very sad.

I think one was a male early on, and then another was female (gave birth) It was reckless of them to have more than one reckless.

LOL...maybe the first Reckless wanted more money like the actor who played Curt???

I remember at one time (may be still true today) it was not uncommon for families to keep a pet name going.... i.e., a favorite name might be used again and again.... my grandparents always had beagles and there was always a Queenie and/or a Lady.... and my parents had two dogs named Careless, about 30 years apart (first one was female, second was male).... Not sure how I feel about this.... and, unfortunately, I occasionally call my current "Annie" by my last dog's name "Minnow" !!!
