Just a quick question..
As of today, 25.6.12, I cannot view the pages of the forum as a guest anymore. I have to log in to do anything. I personally don't mind, but I was wondering if the settings had changed at all?
Many thanks,
mercantile

I noticed that too Mercantile, I don't mind either, it keeps it a little more private.

Yes, I changed the setting today for the reason Daniela gave, to protect the privacy of those who post here. If you want to read the forum, I think you should be willing to become a member and log in. When you log in, there is a "Keep me logged in" option you can check. That way you don't have to keep logging in every time. Also, you have the option of making yourself invisible if you don't want others to know you are here. Just go to your profile and click on Modify Profile. Under Account Preferences you can choose "yes" for the Keep me inivisible option.
Hope this helps.

The reason I raised the issue of logging in to view all of the forum was because some forums have on-topic available to all; posting on that side then of course requires membership, but off-topic remains hidden to all unless membership is current. I gather that this fine forum is mainly on-topic for a very good reason; I've moderated on a few whereby off-topic becomes huge and threatens the integrity of the core subject! I guess to summarise I was heading toward half being visible per se, and half open to the signed up members only. That way there is enough for everyone to choose from, without making it invisible to all who search the web daily. I am sure the correct decision has been made, either way. Many thanks, mercantile

Many thanks, mercantile I can check into it, but I didn't see that as an option. I did this because some people are very private. They don't mind sharing their photos and posts with forum members, but they don't want them to be available to anyone out there who might stumble upon this forum. I hope this is not too much of an inconvenience to the regular users of this forum.

I'm having a hard time understanding the necessity of this.... really don't care one way or the other.... BUT, don't really trust people who have to be overly private, secretive.... if someone is afraid of other people seeing something, they just shouldn't post it..... am I crazy ??

I'm having a hard time understanding the necessity of this.... really don't care one way or the other.... BUT, don't really trust people who have to be overly private, secretive.... if someone is afraid of other people seeing something, they just shouldn't post it..... am I crazy ?? It's not a necessity, it's a preference that I chose. One reason I did this is because we have hundreds of guests, people who visit the forum without logging in, every day. There have been 702 guests in the past 24 hours (as of 8:25 pm eastern time). I'm sure most of these people just have an interest in the Waltons and want to lurk on the forum without actually contributing anything. That's fine. But I do think that huge number of guests is startling, so I decided to change the forum to a more private one, at least for now. If you don't trust people who want to be private, that's your right. We're all different, and we all see things differently. Are you crazy? I don't know. Maybe. Am I crazy? Most likely! ;D Running this forum can do that to a person!

One more thing...
I mentioned earlier that you can keep yourself logged in so you won't have to log in each time you visit the forum. That doesn't mean that your username will show up in the stats as being logged in all the time. After about 5 minutes of inactivity, it will no longer show that you are on the forum.
Hope that's not too confusing.

Still trying to figure this out..... So, if "Guests" are no longer able to view, why does it say that there were 719 Guests in the last 24 hours ?? I guess you (Brenda) have a way of telling that people have simply opened the site (without viewing anything) ?? That would actually be a good thing to know.....
(Just curious -- I'm unbelievably "challenged" when it comes to internet stuff.... or computer stuff in general.....)

Guests can still visit the forum, but they see only the header and the log in screen. Previously, they could see everything that members can see. They just couldn't post.

Brenda, I thought maybe you changed it because of the spam problem we had last week.
