i'm sure this has been discussed before, but what does everyone think about olivias transformation from the thick red head at the beginning of the series to the thin haired blonde she later became? i know the latter is her more natural look and that at the start of the series they were trying to keep her looking like the olivia in 'the homecoming'. what does everyone think? which olivia do you like better? i think i like the early olivia better, but i dont know. lol

Patrica Neal did awesome in "HUD" which I love that movie. I like Olivia in her later year better because she looks so natural in blonde. Olivia in Homecoming played by Patrica Neal had a brownish hair then John Boy had reddish hair which is didn't look good on him but he's 100% better in blond on the Waltons series. I guess everyone have their own opinion.

Hi Betcsu, I see you are from WV. What a beautiful state. I was born and raised in WV. I lived in several places but the last town I lived in was Ripley. It's between Charleston and Parkersburg. There's nothing any prettier than those WV mountains. Take care, Teresa

hello betcsu....I'm from Elkins WV nice to see someone else on here from our wild wonderful state. I like Olivia better in the later seasons when she is a natural blonde. It suits her much better.

Betcsu, I have a aunt who lives in Kearneysville on Charles Town Rd. It's definitely a small world isn't it?

I liked Olivia in all of them, but best in the middle series. When all the kids were still at home. Probably seasons 4 -6.

I liked blond haired Olivia. I thought it looked more natural on her.

I guess everyone have their own opinion. I agree Tracey, Patricia Neal seemed miscast in The Homecoming. Michael Learned not only seemed more of a mother to the children than Neal did, she also looked more relaxed in their presence when they were in character. Assuming Neal had taken on the role as Olivia and had not left as Learned did, then by the time series nine came on the screens, and as Tracey pointed out, "she looks older," then Neal would have looked even older. I don't wish to demean Neal's acting talent, she was marvelous in The Day The Earth Stood Still and Breakfast at Tiffany's, she just didn't seem to fit the role as Olivia. That's just my opinion.

Ms. Learned really looks great on the rare occasions when she lets Olivia's hair fall free. However, I guess that's wrong for the times.

In general, the hairstyles became more funky as the seasons progressed, including Michael’s. The first seasons were more realistic.

And, I enjoyed Patricia Neal tremendously in the Olivia role -- while she seemed like a woman of the 30's, Learned seemed like a more modern woman (say, 60's, 70's)....
