Who were the "real" Baldwin Sisters that Earl Hamner based his characters on? I've never heard names, stories, etc. I didn't know if they really existed, or if they were added to the television show for some flavor.

I think I remember reading that they did exist, although they were actually mother and daughter, and their name wasn't Baldwin. They lived in Scottsville, VA, which isn't far from Nelson County (where Earl grew up), but it's farther than depicted in the show. And I think they did make their own moonshine !

Member Sissy was correct...there are some interview questions with Earl Hamner posted on the INSP website if you go visit there. www.insp.com/shows/thewaltons/He mentioned that yes they were a mother-daughter moonshining family that inspired his idea for the Baldwins. However, I don't think they were as well-off as Miss Mamie & Miss Emily.

I posted once before in August..2006 when the last member of the family died at 101 . She lived with her sister in Dallas(they were born in Murfreesboro, Arkansas) and they were very much like The Baldwin Sisters.

I've never heard names, stories, etc. I didn't know if they really existed, or if they were added to the television show for some flavor. In an interview with Insp Earl said The Baldwin sisters were loosely based on a mother-daughter duo that was well-known in Hamner’s family because “they had a love of alcohol.” Hamner changed the relationship, gave them sweet personalities and made them a bit loftier and more elegant than their down-home, real-life counterparts. “But there were two ladies who were bootleggers, but being a writer, I romanticized them considerably.”
