Grandma: Grandma Comes Home (Grandma returns home to a loving family, but all is not well. She is overly protcted by Grandpa and no longer feels needed. This was Ellen Corby's first appearance in the series since her stroke in 1976. This would be Will Geer's last episode. He died during the show's summer hiatus.) Ah I knew somebody would pick Grandma Comes Home, I almost did! I'm surprised this hasn't been a more popular choice actually.

I think Grandma's return to The Waltons after her debilitating stroke is one of the most valiant moments in television history. One of the things I really love about The Waltons is how the writers wove real life into the episodes. Ellen Corby suffered a stroke in real life, so Grandma suffered a stroke in The Waltons. The cast members welcomed her back with open arms when she was ready to return, just as the family welcomed Grandma back. I think the cast of The Waltons showed a cohesiveness that isn't usually present among cast emembers of other TV series. Maybe this is what made them so believable. They really thought of one another as family.

How in the world did I miss this thread?
Daddy - "John's Crossroads".
Livvy - Believe it or not, I like the one where she takes art classes and the teacher falls for her. We get reminded that Livvy is not just a mama, she's a beautiful woman. And she chooses her family in the end.
Grandpa - The one where Ben goes to work for the rival lumber company and Grandpa tricks them into floating their order down the river. "The Outsiders"?
Grandma - "The Bequest".
John-Boy - Oh gosh..."The Firestorm", "The Conflict", "The Genius" (love how he interacts with Lyle!), "The Return"...And he is just so dead-sexy in "The Marathon"!
Mary Ellen - "The Minstrel".
Jason - "The Conscience".
Ben - I'll choose the one where he went to work for the other lumber mill for him too.
Erin - "The Career Girl". We don't get to see Erin shine enough. I also love the one where she meets Chad.
Jim-Bob - "The Search". He really stepped up to the plate and OMGosh how adorable is he???
Elizabeth - "The Burn Out".

i agree with Dewlanna but for Olivia i would also choose The Parting or The Search because in The Search it shows how great of a mother she was and The Parting because you could definately see the emotion not only in the character but in Michael aswell.

One of the best threads here for me. :-)
I am going to go away and think about this one for a while. A quality cast and a quantity of episodes deserves some pondering..

The best one for Verdie - when John Boy taught her to read. I can't remember the name of the episode.
The best one for the Baldwin Sisters - when they find the hidden room in their house with the old still in it just as they are having to give up the still they had always used.
For Ike - the episode where CoraBeth thought she was pregnant but found out she wasn't. She ran off to Olivia & Ike came to talk to her. He spent the night on the porch. He showed real sincere love for CoraBeth in that episode.
For Rose - when Stanley "took off" from the mental hospital & just had to see Miss Rose. She showed true compassion & support to Stanley.
Maude - the one were she tried running away & hiding from her son because he wanted to put her in an old folks home.
Yancey - when he let Ben stay with him after their house burnt or when he brought his bride Cissy home for the first time.
Sheriff Ep Bridges - when he & his wife adopt the boy & girl.

I'll have to give this some thought but I can say I loved Grandpa in The Statue, one of my favorite episodes. There's so many! Grandma Comes Home is another at the top of my list. I'll think abou this.

I'm bringing this thread back up because I can't find anywhere else to make this comment. I watched The Burden today, and though I wasn't a big fan of the plot line, I was struck by one scene. I've never thought that Erin was a particularly good or believable actress. She so often seems to be reading her lines, accentuating the wrong words in dialogue, and oftentimes comes off like a teen in a high school play.
When Elizabeth and Erin are on the front porch discussing the butterfly trap Elizabeth was making, I was struck by how much better an actress Elizabeth was. She totally out-performed Erin in that scene. JMHO.

Grandma- Grandma Comes Home and also The Search. In The Search we got a rare look at the gentle side of Grandma when she was with Mary Ellen and Erin waiting for everyone to come home safely. Also we saw her deep faith in God and in the end she instilled that faith into Mary Ellen and Erin.

I'm bringing this back up to update my feelings about Erin's acting abilities on the show. Although I didn't manage to "marathon" yesterday, I did see most of the Easter move, and I admit, I was much more impressed with Erin in that show. Her acting skills seem to have changed quite significantly in those few years. The scene when she discussed the young student with her mother, and another one with Elizabeth in the diner were very well done and well played. Okay, I feel better now.
