I was watching the show where Jim-Bob tries to sign up with the naval reserve and gave his birthday as June 13, and I think the year was 1924. It got me wondering if we were told anyone else's birthday on the show. Anyone here recall a reference? Just wondering...

Cindy Brunson Walton was born April 26,1925(The Carousel)
Come to think of it Jimbob was 19 approaching 20 when he graduated from high school, He graduated June 8,1944 two days after D Day. (The Valediction)

so Cindy is younger than Jim Bob? Love the Waltons and their screwy time line!
In Dust Bowl Cousins, we know that Mary Ellen in 13 and Jason is 15...no birthdays (just age) though and I am not sure if they tell the year in that episode.

Does it make sense to say The Dust Bowl Cousins was in the summer or fall of 1934? That was the year the dust bowl really got bad, This would mean Jason was born in 1919 and Mary Ellen in 1921,It would follow that Elizabeth was born either the last of 1926 or the very first of 1927

I psoted the last one twice by accident, I believe The Ferris Wheel might have been from 1937 because of the menion if Dizzy Dean. The previous visit of the carnival would have been 1932 when Elizabeth left home and went to the carnival.

I tried to figure out the years the children were born by what was mentioned in season 1 and by their physical appearance. Surprisingly, until the last seasons where they sped through WWII, the ages remain pretty accurate. In season one, throughout various episodes, it is mentioned that John Boy is 17, Jason is 15, Mary Ellen is 13 and Elizabeth is 5.
Here are my estimated birth years: John Boy - 1916 Jason - 1917 or 1918 (he could be 18 mos - 2 years younger than John Boy depending on when their birthdays are) Mary Ellen - 1920 Ben - 1921 Erin - 1922 Jim Bob - 1924 Elizabeth - 1928

Jason could not have been conceived until John came back from WWI France -- so I think he's a little younger..... and I think Elizabeth would be about a year older than you have her.... also, Erin was older than Ben.... just my "supposin's!"

The US declared war in April 1917. If Jason was conceived prior to the declaration of war, then his birthdate would have been late 1917 to early 1918. Also, John probably wouldn't have immediately gone off to France to fight, still leaving ample time for Jason's conception in 1917.
In Season 1 there are enough references to it being 1933. In fact (the episode totally escapes me) there is reference to the Long Beach earthquake which took place on March 10, 1933. The Carnival talks about the Chicago Worlds Fair that opened in May 1933. We know John Boy was 17, making his birthyear either 1916 or 1915. The problematic episode would be The Dust Bowl Cousins that should be set in the spring of 1934. Jason states he is 15, which would put his birthyear in the last 2/3 of 1918 (if it was in the first 1/3, then he would have been 16), but John probably would have been in France by then.
It is also mentioned early in Season 1 that Elizabeth is 5. Given that it was 1933, her birthyear would have been either 1928 or 1927.
Still have a hard time with Erin being older than Ben because their physical appearance in the early seasons definitely shows the three year gap in the actors' ages.

No matter how much older he looked, in the show he was younger.

The problem with Jason's age is that I don't think they ever say that Liv was pregnant while John was away and we know that Jason had not yet "arrived" prior to John heading off to war..... also, I believe it was mentioned somewhere along the way that there were around 3 years between JB and Jason....

I've listened closely to whenever there has been a discussion about John in WWI and I have never heard any mention about the children during that time. There has been references to John and Olivia being married at that point, but no references (that I can recall) to any children, not even John Boy, yet we know that he would have been born by then because there are numerous references to him being 17 and the year being 1933 in season 1.
WWI, for the US, only lasted 7 months from April - November 1918, so Jason could have been born in 1918 easily. If John left immediately in April 1918, then Jason's birth wouldn't have been possible between Jan 1919 - Aug 1919.

There were in fact a couple of times when John mentioned having hated to leave Liv alone with John-Boy when he went to war (no mention of Jason) .... and, during those specific script lines he certainly would have mentioned Liv being pregnant (with Jason).... I have no idea when John might have been "called up" but certainly our boys/men did not serve ONLY during a seven month period.... We entered the war April 6, 1917.... and there must have been training camps, etc..... The war ended in November 1918.

In the Homecoming script, the ages are listed as John-Boy 17, Jason 14, Mary Ellen 13, Erin 12, Ben 10, Jim-Boy 7 and Elizabeth 5.
