The Playboy pose was not typical of Judy though. I'm not sure about that. I believe when either Ralph Waite or Richard Thomas (can't remember which) was told of Judy's "Playboy" they roared with laughter and said, "Typical Judy!" Also, in The Waltons she definitely seem to like showing off her legs where possible even though it made the scenes anachronistic in terms of clothing (see "The Dust Bowl Cousins" and "The Wager" and "The Awakening"). She was just a young girl who had a decent body and liked showing it off where possible. She obviously liked sunbathing on the California beaches too, judging by the tan she sports in most episodes! Whether she really regrets the Playboy, I dunno. Perhaps she says she regrets it because that's what people expect her to say and given she never went on to anything bigger, "The Waltons" is probably what she continues to want to be associated with, so her attitude has to fit in with what fans of that series expect. No doubt if the Playboy had springboarded her onto a highly-successful career, she would have a different opinion. Other actresses (like Drew Barrymore, Chole Sevigny and Bijou Phillips, amongst others) have done similar photos and it doesn't seem to have affected their careers at all. So I think Judy's regrets are probably more down to the photo sets not pushing forward her career as she hoped coupled with her latter-day want to fit into what viewers (naively) expect a Waltons Actor to be like.

I recall in the 90's seeing Richard Thomas playing the part of a "crazed" villan in a crime drama series. It was a big disappointment for me. I have had this image of a caring affectionate man in my mind for so many years - I couldn't stand to watch it. It renewed my perception of John Boy when I saw him in the role of the conscientious juror in Twelve Angry Men. He should stick to these more positive roles.

I remember that. It was really wierd that he would want to take part in such a movie

Drew Barrymore, Chole Sevigny and Bijou Phillips weren't part of the Waltons family, so no doubt was easier for them to get away with posing nude.
I remember a movie RT/JB was in where he stalked a co-worker and he even got fired. That was so out of character for him and was depressing to watch. I hated the movie.

Everyone's reactions to Richard's other role illustrates why actors so hate to be typecast.

Everyone's reactions to Richard's other role illustrates why actors so hate to be typecast. That's right Bucky. It makes it tough to get new roles...

I watched the last episode of season 4 last night, where a rich girl's daddy lost his fortune. John Boy and her had a bit of an opened mouth kiss. She said, "You've been practicing!"
As for Judy Norton; it was stated that she couldn't get other acting jobs because of her "goody two shoes" image. She wanted to do away with that image. She wasn't the first to go that route, and like the others she found out it didn't work. She ended up regretting it like many others. Eric Scott had, like other cast members found it very difficult to find other roles for being typecast. That's why Richard Thomas left the show, hoping to prevent that. He stated in an interview (I think 2005) that it was difficult for him to get other parts he wanted for being typecast as John Boy. He resented it for awhile but overcame it. We, the fans, have to let them stretch their talents if we're going to enjoy them after their original characters are done with. I've seen Richard Thomas in Red Badge of Courage, The Christmas Box, The Million Dollar Kid (with Maureen McCormick--Marcia Brady), and IT. He's a very good actor and I enjoy his talent in these various parts. I've seen Mary McDonough in two movies I saw on TBN at Christmas time, both I enjoyed, as well as those few times I saw her on The New Adventures of Old Christine. I've enjoyed Ralph Waite on a few episodes of NCSI as the daddy. He's in his 80s and still acting. I remember Michale Learned in Nurse and she's a very good actress. I'm surprised she didn't get more roles.
I look at it this way; I think it's good that they stretch their talents into other types of roles we're not use to. In reality I don't see any of them (except the Playboy posing by Judy) in scandals like we see so often with many actors and other performers. We, the fans, don't allow them to go outside of our boxes. Lucille Ball had 3 very successful shows on tv, but all were basically the same "Lucy" character. She was praised though for her portrayal of a bag lady in a made-for-tv drama. We are partially responsible for those we enjoy in one setting from allowing them to get acting jobs in other settings. We typecast them and therefore limit them. I would like to see all of them in other roles.

I remember seeing Richard Thomas in the tv movie mentioned above & he definitely played a creepy character but did it very well & was very believable in the role. In the 70's (not sure of the year) he played another creepy character in a movie called "You'll Like My Mother" opposite Patty Duke. It shows enormous talent to be able to portray characters of such stark contrast.

I remember reading that Eric Scott got tired of the casting calls so he left the acting business. He's a very successful business man now, owns his own messenger business. Very much like Ben. I know Kami Kotter became a school teacher in Nelson County Virginia for years, but is back in California now. We know Judy's history and mistakes. Jon travels with his band performing around the country, and the world. It seems to be more difficult for child actors to obtain other acting rolls then adult actors. I'm still shocked that Michael Learned hasn't been offered more roles. I started watching season 5 a couple days ago, she's a great actress. I'd love to see all of them in other roles.

I agree that Michael Learned is a terrific actress along with Ellen Corby. I believe from reading that is was by choice later on that she didn't take more roles. Some of the problems being discussed do fall on the actors themselves because there egos get in the way. They believe they have to be the star or want to be the star of whatever there doing. When there are alot of great supporting character roles in movies an tv. An a lot of child actors who have had problems were usually spoiled, an as they got older everything wasn't handed to them. Not necessairly the walton children but we all know the ones who did.

"They believe they have to be the star or want to be the star of whatever there doing." - I agree or maybe they were not that great of an actor to begin with. Sometimes people just end up being in the right spot at the right time for awhile and when that passes so does their fame as they can not duplicate it on their own.

So many careers ended up as footnotes because an actor/actress wanted to be THE STAR.

So many careers ended up as footnotes because an actor/actress wanted to be THE STAR. Look what happened with "Friends" - the "stars" wanted so much money for their roles that they ended up bankrupting the show and it became no longer economically viable to produce it. Sheer greed.
